Master Items and Slideshow Animation problems

    DerekDigital Community Member

I've just been updating a site - http://www.wttr.org.uk - that I created in the previous version of Muse. I've discovered that the white panel at the left side of the page - that is on my Master A - now changes size from page to page. This is didn't happen when I created or updated the site in the previous version of Muse. This is the second Muse site that has malfunctioned since opening it the new release. Have a look at http://www.lukebremnerfitness.com on an iPhone or iPad. After the fourth silde the text slideshow animation rewinds instead of looping. Also I can now manually swipe through the text slideshow when I don't want the audience to do that. In addition I can now stop the slideshow in the background. None of these things were possible when I created and published the site in the previous version of Muse. I've double-checked and do not have Tablet and iPhone layouts enabled. I just want these sites to perform they way they used to. I used to love this problem however it suddenly seems to have become very buggy!

Your post refers to four different changes in behavior that in some cases were intentional and in other cases are bugs we need to fix.

          1) Rectangle on Master page resizes to accommodate changes in text frame and/or HTML object height in browser (versus the size in Design view within Muse).

This was an intentional change in behavior to address inconsistent behavior depending on whether a rectangle was on the master page or on the actual page.

Text frames and HTML objects may not end up having the same height in the browser as they had in Muse Design view (since they grow to accommodate the text as laid out by the browser or the HTML as flowed by the browser). When a text frame or HTML object ends up being taller in the browser than it was in Muse Design view rectangles that encompass it will be enlarged to accommodate the new height and content below it on the page will be shifted down. To avoid this behavior the text frames and/or HTML object frames in Muse Design view need to be sized large enough in Design view to fully accommodate the maximum height that will occur in the browser.

          2) Auto-play slideshows on iOS devices rewind from the end back to the beginning rather than smoothly looping.

This is a bug. Not sure how we broke it. Originally slideshows always rewound during autoplay. Customers complained about that behavior. It was changed for the initial 1.0 release (or perhaps it was for 2.0). It's not immediately clear how we managed to enable the old behavior in 3.0 and only on iOS devices. It's a bug. We'll verify we can reproduce it, write up a bug and investigate a fix.

          3) Swipe is enabled for all slideshows.

This was intentional, but we should have opted to leave swipe disabled for the case of a slideshow on a desktop page that has no navigation buttons provided (on the theory that if there's no mouse-based way to navigate the slideshow a visitor shouldn't be able to do it using swipe either). We'll discuss this one internally and either treat this specific case as a bug and address it as described, or come up with another alternative.

          4) Site visitor interaction with a slideshow halts autoplay.

This is intentional, but when combined with the fact swipe is now enabled for all slideshows it leads to the problem you encountered of being able to halt the autoplay of a slideshow that you don't want visitors to be able to interact with at all. Once #3 is addressed, that should also address this.

            Hi Zak,

Many thanks for your full and comprehensive reply as always.

I'm a little baffled at your team's decision to enable Muse Master Items to change size etc. Doesn't this defeat the whole purpose of Master Items? If I create a Master Item in an application like InDesign then I expected it be the same size and shape and in the same position on every page of the document unless I manually override the master item and alter it on an individual page. If the Muse team had provided this functionality then I'd understand it better. Based on your answer I guess my only options are to draw the white rectangle on every page of the website or open the Muse site in Dreamweaver and style it using CSS in order to keep the rectangle the same size.

Good to know that I wasn't missing a trick re: the slideshow options. I'll hold off opening and updating any more sites for clients in release 3.0 unless there's an option for me to reinstall 2.0!?

              Hello Zak,

I've just downloaded the Muse update that was released on January 08. I'm now trying to fix the Master Item on the WTTR website - which I discussed earlier in this thread.

Given what you told me about Master Items I decided to cut the white rectangle from of the Master Page and use Paste In Place to position it correctly on to every page in the Muse site. (which was a tad annoying to have to do this in the first place.) In Muse's Design view everything looks perfect. The site appears the way it used to do in Version 2.x. However as soon as I switch to Preview or view the site externally the rectangle continues to change size even though it has been pasted onto each separate page. Aaargh!!!

These days I tend to specify all websites as 1024 x 768 pixels and ensure there is sufficent space at the bottom of the page so that the whole page contents can be seen on a tablet device. Is there an option that I've overlooked that lets me lock the size of this rectangle so that its specific dimensions don't change regardless of the content that I place on top of it? In CSS I can use the min-height and max-height attributes.

I want things to be pixel perfect! So perhaps I'm still at a loss to understand why a feature that worked so beautifully in Muse 2.x. has been altered so much that it is now frustrating for me to use.
