John T Smith Dec 25, 2012 9:38 AM (in response to lasvideo)Is that advertising supported on the website, or inside the actual program?
Does the download link include a "also install this..." pre-checked, or are you able to just download the program?

John T Smith Dec 25, 2012 9:54 AM (in response to lasvideo)OK... http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en/Bundled has the details, which say YOU choose what to install
I have seen a lot of reports from that program, and do not remember a single person (other than you) mentioning advertising... so I guess the other users just chose to NOT install any of the bundled software
There are even complaints over in http://forums.adobe.com/community/general/forum_comments from time to time about Adobe's pre-checked install bundling with some products... with the usual reply being that you always need to actually read all install screens to be sure you don't accept something you don't want by not reading
Based on what it says on the download site you linked, I would go ahead and install... after very carefully reading the install screen

That message has some saying you may opt out, others saying "stuff" was installed anyway
If you are in doubt, don't download the program

Bill Hunt Dec 25, 2012 12:33 PM (in response to lasvideo)I have not detected what you are encountering, but then have an older version of MediaInfo, with no ads, or similar. Much, however, could well have changed, and thank you for bringing that to my attention.
Good luck, and please let us know how things progress.

Steven L. Gotz Dec 25, 2012 1:51 PM (in response to lasvideo)I installed it just a couple of weeks ago. No ads. Nothing odd at all. Just a screen I drop videos on.
However, since you are a good guy I just went to reinstall it to make sure, and I had to uncheck the boxes that allowed it to install junk.
A lot of programs do that now. You just have to be firm and uncheck every box that might load a program you didn't ask for.
Other than that, the software behaves quite nicely.

lasvideo Dec 25, 2012 1:55 PM (in response to Steven L. Gotz)Wonderful. Thank you Steven.
On their website I read that for a donation you could get a version that did a straight install.
Im so careful with the HP I donated $10 to get that version. Hell, from what I see it looks like a good cause as well. I havent got the link yet, but it is Xmas so maybe tomorrow.

Steven L. Gotz Dec 25, 2012 2:01 PM (in response to lasvideo)I see now that there is a note on the site that says:
(the installer is bundled with a software distribution network. Learn more.)
That's why the garbage during the install. But it is easy enough if you pay attention. Actually, contributing $10 for software that we all use, and that we ask many newbies to use, seems quite fair.

lasvideo Dec 25, 2012 2:04 PM (in response to Steven L. Gotz)Yes, my feelings exactly.
Also I didnt care for this little read so I dont mind contributing to a good cause...
- No private information is gathered from you except for basic data polling such as language, OS and geographic location for advertisement selection during installation.
For details see the software distribution network privacy policy.

Steven L. Gotz Dec 25, 2012 2:07 PM (in response to lasvideo)Well, AVG is what they are trying to install, so if you don't install it, I figure it is OK.
I did look in my programs list to make sure. It isn't there.

Jim Simon Dec 27, 2012 12:46 PM (in response to lasvideo)I've seen MediaInfo get things wrong. That's why I stick with Gspot. It's spot on.

Ann Bens Dec 27, 2012 1:23 PM (in response to Jim Simon)Gspot does not read mts files.
That is why most people switched to Mediainfo.

lasvideo Dec 27, 2012 1:52 PM (in response to Ann Bens)Thanks everybody for the info.
I made a $10 donation to Mediainfo on Xmas since the site said I could get a regular installer that way.
I havent heard back yet, but I dont expect to until next week.

Ah yes. For that I use VLC, also more accurate than MediaInfo.
