3D Feature Taken Away, Why?

I pay for creative cloud and after the recent update i'm not able to use the 3d feature in photoshop anymore. I did some research and photoshop chaned the requirement for ram to 588, but why? I have 288 and it was working just fine. I pay for this product to make money and to take a feature away from me that worked just fine is not right. I paid for this service for 4 months using the 3d feature just fine and bam, its gone. What is the reason why you dont want me using 3d feature at 288mb video ram? The thing that really bothers me is that i have projects that have 3d layers in them and now i'm screwed. We deserve answers from the development team.

Adobe increased the minimum requirements for Photoshop's 3D facilities.

I might have expected that at a major release rather than a minor one, but they chose to do so with 13.1 - no doubt to make the 3D facilities of Photoshop more feature rich and work better.

I suppose in signing up for a service where you'll automatically get new versions (with new features rather than just bugfixes), you've tacitly agreed to keep your hardware up to date enough to run each new version as it comes out.

The good news is that, for those systems where you can change a video card, new video cards that have 1GB or more of RAM aren't particularly expensive. Both ATI and nVIdia have fairly powerful cards in the $100 range. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with all the Macintosh options for hardware upgrades.

The bad thing is first having a macbook pro. The only thing in the macbooks you can upgrade is the ram, battery and the hard drive. I called apple and even the tech was surprised at what adobe did. And i'll bet my money on it apple wasnt made aware for its customer base that using adobe products. If i had a desktop computer, this wouldnt be an issue cause the video card can be replaced. I have 2 things going against me, 1 apple doesnt suppose replacing video cards and 2 apple doesnt offer drivers for its hardware in this paticular situatioin. Something must give. Why hasnt there beeen any explaination reguarding this matter? Do you have any idea how many mac users this effects? The new macbook pros in 2010 came out with stock 255mb and i got the 288mb video card. This new product was a huge seller and im not the only person that bought one.

That's certainly a not-so-nice situation.

I suppose you could deinstall the software, then reinstall and avoid choosing to upgrade to 13.1 and beyond, but of course that excludes your being able to take advantage of future feature updates.

I know this doesn't help you, but generally when people ask me about what kind of system to buy for Photoshop work I advise against getting laptops - they are not philosophically in line with Photoshop's needs as they are optimized for things other than compute power, and they limit your flexibility.

I'm not insensitive to your situation, but I'm going to play devil's advocate here for a moment...

Let's lay the situation out plainly:

Several years ago you bought a laptop the design of which was optimized for portability - not maximum compute power, and whose specs weren't top-of-the-line when you bought it. It *just* met the minimum requirements for Photoshop when it was new.
Now today that hardware has fallen below the minimum requirements for certain features (not usually involved with on-location work) in the very latest Photoshop release.
You have subscribed to Photoshop / Creative Suite software, implying you want to keep up to date with the very latest and greatest releases.

Is that a fair assessment overall?

If so, some questions come to mind:

1. How future-proof did you expect that machine to be? Two years is kind of a long time to still expect it to be able to run state-of-the-art graphics software well.

2. Why the difference in philosophy between keeping software up to date with the latest and greatest, and keeping your hardware up to date? Averaged over the 30 months since you got the computer, the price is not in a different ballpark from what you're paying for Photoshop to keep IT up to date.

It seems to me that you've opted to have Adobe deliver the latest and greatest software functionality to you, but you've somehow decided that you're not equally willing to keep your hardware on which you rely to run that software up to the latest and greatest standards.

Out of curiosity, how did you expect it to go when you ultimately found out that the machine was no longer sufficient for the task?

I was on the phone with adoe for over 2 hours about this situation. Finally after trouble shooting, flat out asked the guy the obvious "is adobe strong arming its customers to do a hardware upgrade?" the guy from adobe didnt konw what to say. Finally i got so fed up i asked if i could call apple on 3 way to get to the bottom of this.

apple tech rep agreed that apple is doing wrong by their customers if this feature worked just fine before.

Instead of bellying, the community needs answers from the development team.

Are GPU's frying too often when over driving from rendering? So because i was rendering 3d graphics at 258 mb instead of 528mb does this fry my GPU and adobe doesnt want to be liable anymore?

I just want answer's, talk to ur customer base. stop pasing the buck when i call to this team leader to that team leader, tell us the truth!

Assuming you mean "passing" the buck, are you under the impression that I'm with Adobe? I'm not. I'm also not under the impression that anyone is forcing me to buy the computers and software I need to run my business.

You have your answer: The software no longer supports 3d rendering with your hardware.

Seems to me you just need to come to grips with the fact that your computer is no longer sufficient to run the software, get a better one, and move on.

I'm curious: What rationale did you use to justify buying less than the best hardware at the time you bought your laptop? I'm guessing you saved money by getting the model with only a few hundred MB of VRAM, vs. the one with 512MB. This is where you pay for that decision.

uninstalled photoshop and tested 3d on 13.0 and works great. did the update for 13.1 and bam they disable it.

13.1 is a new version, with more 3D features, and improved enforcement of the minimum requirements that were stated in 13.0.

The botom line is if you want to keep up wirh the latest software featurs you have to buy the latest hardware to handle it. Generally more features and faster processes means better hardware to handle it. Remember it was only 20 years ago that 256K of ram was standard.....

The minimum requirement for 3D was 512 Meg VRAM in 13.0.

13.1 started enforcing the VRAM limit a bit more, and deprecated a few GPUs that were known not to work after more extensive testing (especially older ones that won't be getting driver updates).

The OP has a NV 330M, and 256Meg of VRAM. That never should have worked for 3D in CS6.

And the minimum requirements are there because we tested and found that was the minimun configuration that didn't fail to work.

We do sometimes have to blacklist some GPUs and drivers in later releases, because once more extensive testing is done (and we get all the crash reports in), we find that they are not working as they should and their drivers won't be updated to fix the problems.

Unfortunately, Apple is deprecating a lot of older GPUs in their latest OS versions.

Very interesting that no data at all is being shown about the driver version (it's usually there).

I'd suggest visiting Intel.com and seeing if they have an updated Windows display driver download for your hardware and operating system. Driver updates solve many issues.

Beyond that possibility, though they're good at hardware Intel has not been known for making great GPU driver software, though they seem to be gradually getting better.

Ah, strange, what's not in the 'System info' report is the platform. I'm running this on a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.8.5. The notion of 'driver updates' are a bit foreign with OSX. So, yes, Apple tells me I have the latest.

Is there anything in my post that would seem to *keep* 3D functions from working?

Oops, sorry, I completely overlooked that it's a Mac. Guess I should avoid trying to make the brain cells work that early in the morning.

I don't know what else could keep the 3D functions from running.

The 3d feature is not working for someone like my self because my machine currently doesn't have enough video ram. adobe is forcing the requirement of 512mb of ram.. If you don't have at least that, 3d is disabled.. Sucks!!

Adobe clearly list the minimum system requirement needed to run Photoshop. If you want to use all of Photoshop features you must meet the requirements. Adobe state you can run Photoshop with less then 512MB of VRAM however 3D and some other features will not be available. Adobe is up front with the system requirements no deception on their part. Photoshop 3D support requires at least 512MB of VRAM more is better. You not forced to get Photoshop. You not forced to buy gas for you car but if you want to use it you must meet it gas requirement.
