Thanks, Peter, but this didn't work. I tried the 'safe' method first, then trashed the preferences altogether. All I achieved was work to get ID back the way I like it.
The document is over 300 pages and only the last text block, which spans about 40 pages, is acting up. If I copy the text and paste it into an existing or new text block, selection hightlighting works fine. I have tried deleting the offending pages, then pasting the text into a new text block, but I never get that far. ID crashes immediately if I try to delete all the pages at once. If I do them one at a time, it crashes on the third deletion no matter which order I delete them.
I am truly befuddled.
Further suggestions would be appreciated.
That sounds like a possible font problem or perhaps some sort of coruption in the text frame. If the latter, a trip through .idml might work. See Remove minor corruption by exporting
A more powerful tool that might work would be to export the story as InDesign Tagged Text, then re-import it. I'd probably import into a new file rather than do any more work in the existing document.
It sounds like there may be a minor corruption in the document. Try exporting it to IDML, open the IDML file, and see if it behaves better.
(Oops, Peter typed faster than me.)
Peter and Tom -
You guys got it! I exported the file to .idml, then opened that file - everything was perfect. I saved it with a different name. Thanks so much for your help. The best of the new year to you both. I hope the year of the snake is more than hiss and fangs for you.
