iBabs2 Jan 3, 2013 10:38 AM (in response to P Spier)Hi Peter,
You are right, I would LOVE to try this...Unfortunately, I am at a clients and not authorized to load anything into their machines, including these kinds of scripts. ;(
I can try this when I get home though, and I will, but in the meantime, I am still trying to figure out a shortcut. I can't help but think if Quark had one, then hopefully there is one buried here somewhere. There should be a feature, like the non-joiner that breaks ligatures apart, that does the opposite, make 2 letters ligatures or at least touch closer.
thanks!!!

3. Re: Is there a way to take 2 letters and make them a ligature if there is not one built into the font.
P Spier Jan 3, 2013 10:47 AM (in response to iBabs2)I don't recall what Quark did with ligatures, but I remember it making faux bold and faux italics, two other things that ID does not do. Proper ligatures are a lot more than just kerning the pair tighter (as I'm quite sure you know ) but that IS something ID can do automatically using a GREP style.

iBabs2 Jan 3, 2013 10:55 AM (in response to P Spier)Hi Peter,
If I became desperate, I was going to just do the kerning option, using a find and repalce character style or a GREP style (since its 2 ff's, I can actually get away with it), wouldn't be the case for all letters, as yes, it usually is a lot more than just the kerning.....But, in this case, I may be able to swing it....
I usally do have my laptop on me, but I lent it out to someone, so it will be a late night experment.
Basically, I wanted to just jump on here to make sure I wasn't missing anything, and it doesnt look like I am.
As always ..thank you so much!!!

6. Re: Is there a way to take 2 letters and make them a ligature if there is not one built into the font.
Joel Cherney Jan 3, 2013 10:55 AM (in response to iBabs2)Well, most ligatures actually require changes to the shape of the glyphs. The Unicode spec does define a "zero-width joiner" that is used in Arabic or Indic scripts that does what you want - it causes two glyphs that would ordinarily not be joined to join up. Take a look at the wikipedia page for demos of this behavior in Devanagari and Kannada. As the samples make clear, the font needs to have an alternate glyph shape in it already in order to use the ZWJ. If I insert a ZWJ in between two Latin-script f glyphs in a font that does not have an ff lig, I don't create a ligature.
What the heck could Quark do to a pair of 'f' glyphs that would connect them? Couldn't you simply kern them closer together? I know that when I key in a pair of 'f' glyphs in Minion in ID, I get the ff lig, and when I kern them apart to destroy the ligature and make two separate glyphs, the ascender of the first 'f' glyph changes shape. I can't imagine that Quark would automate the distortion of the ascender, or that if it did, it would necessarily look good in any given font.

Hello,
I am picking up an old job and need to use the old font with it. This particular font doesn't have a ligatures for when 2 ff's are next to each other and I need to make them into a ligature, Is there a shortcut that will do this in InDesign?
We had one in quark back in the day, but now using InDesign, I need to find something that will work here.
Thanks

iBabs2 Jan 3, 2013 12:20 PM (in response to Joel Cherney)Hi Joel,
I wish I could answer what the heck Quark was doing...LOL Sadly, I cannot, I can only go by what the client was telling me.
I did end up making a character style and they did a quick find and replace and compared it to the original stuff and it looks fine. Could not have gotten away with it with the fl or ti..They are totally different, but thankfully available in the glyph panel..just not the one I needed, but it seemed to have worked out for now.
I am going to play with the scripts that Peter so kindly shared and see if I can come up with anything as well!!
Thank you for all the info...it's always so helpful and greatly appreciated!

I think there's a strong possibility that your client has a creative memory.

HeyMikey Jan 3, 2013 12:45 PM (in response to iBabs2)I'm sure you've checked this, but being someone else's computer, it may have inadvertently been deselected. In the Character panel, in the options pull-down menu, make sure Ligatures is checked. If not, check it. If you have a document open, it will only affect the open document, so close any documents and THEN make sure Ligatures is checked. Just a thought, and hope it helps!
Cheers,

No, but seriously, I've found some evidence that there may have at one point been a Quark XTension that would contextually pull ligature glyphs from the expert set of a Type 1 font. Which is not what Babs needed, but is close enough to excuse the supposition on the part of the (I assume not really technically inclined) client that such a thing existed.
As an aside... I swear that I've had more opportunities to talk about ye olde-fashioned expert sets of T1 fonts in the last month than in the previous five years combined. Everywhere I turn, there's another person using a single Mac-only T1 expert-set glyph in the middle of an all-OT, all-cross-platform workflow, or another person asking "Why are these extra fonts in my Document Fonts folder?" or something similar.

14. Re: Is there a way to take 2 letters and make them a ligature if there is not one built into the font.
mpc999 Jan 3, 2013 1:22 PM (in response to Joel Cherney)Joel and Peter are on the right track. Since ligatures are designed, or "crafted", and not merely produced by kerning, they must be preexisting within the font or substituted from an expert font as in the old days. It's better to go without, than to smash the letters together.
