    flash player  beta 11.6

    drf0352 Community Member

i downloaded the beta 11.6 installer from the labs page since 11.5 won't work for me most if the time. i use mozzila and watch vids from e-mail in outlook. after the download i could watch vids until a pause happened from buffering and then the vid would freeze. i found also that flash player would not work some of the time. also the debuger would not load and gave me this (flashplayer11-6_debug_win_pi.exe.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read) the beta standalone would only load 24%. i have been having flash player problems for months with 11.5. i have tryed the safe mode fix. deleting all flash from the registry and reloading. and when it does work it's gone again with a new boot. if there is something in the cpu that's missing i don't know what it is. any suggestions?

It sounds like you're encountering multiple problems, and that they existed before you installed the 11.6 beta.  I'm actually a little confused about what you're running into.  It would be good to treat each problematic use-case you're encountering as an individual problem and take them one at a time.

Based on the download failures, it also sounds like you're having connectivity problems.  The binary downloads are served off of the Akamai CDN network -- it's really the gold-standard in terms of content delivery and availability.  If the downloads aren't completing, there was some problem between your machine and Akamai that's beyond our control.  It may have been temporary, in which case you shouldn't see problems now.

If the issues persist, I would recommend using some standard network diagnostic techniques (traceroute, ping, etc) to get a feel for the quality of your connection.  The how-to on that is beyond the scope of what I want to get into here, but googling "troubleshooting network connectivity" should get you on that path.  If you're seeing packet loss over 4-5% to some or most sites, I'd start a conversation with your ISP.  Wet weather can definitely impact your connection quality if you're on DSL or Cable, if some of the hardware in the last mile between you and the company is wet or corroded.

I'm personally a fan of the annual Windows re-install, especially on systems where I'm encountering all kinds of mysterious behavior.  Because you're seeing a persistent cluster of unique problems, I'm thinking that your machine is in a bad state.  On a professional level, it's kind of a cop-out, and I don't like to recommend it as a pat answer, but if you're seeing a bunch of mysterious problems aside from just Flash Player, you might consider it.  Especially if you're browsing to a lot of sites that aren't necessarily trustworthy.  It's hard to know how or why your machine is in that state, but there are tons of possibilities.

That said, I'm happy to work with you to try and sort out Flash Player specifically, but if you've already diligently worked through the Installation and Video troubleshooting FAQs, and you're not having success downloading, uninstalling or reinstalling software on your machine, something is really wrong.

I have a few questions that might help to at least get a theory going:

          1. What Antivirus/Malware/Security programs are you running?  Specific versions would be helpful.
          2. In Firefox, type about:support in the address bar.  Copy the contents and include them in your response.
          3. In Firefox, type about:plugins in the address bar.  Copy the contents and include them in your response.
          4. In Firefox, go to Help > Restart with Add-Ons disabled.  Does this improve your Firefox situation?
          5. You said that you're watching videos in Outlook using Flash.  Am I correct in thinking that you click links and a browser launches, navigates to a page and displays the video using Flash Player?  It this browser also Firefox?
          6. Finally, you mentioned something about standalone.  Standalone (and the Content Debugger) are for people making Flash content.
If you're trying to install Flash Player for Firefox, you want the Plug-In version for Windows (and ActiveX is for Internet Explorer specifically).

To rule out any weirdness, I'd recommend downloading and running the Uninstaller before trying to re-install Flash Player.
I would then reboot, and run the uninstaller.
Given that something is weird with your machine, please be diligent with the reboots.
Rebooting minimizes the chance that anything is running and preventing Flash Player from uninstalling correctly.
I would then reboot again, and run the Plug-In installer you downloaded earlier.
          7. At that point, if you're still running into issues, please try to provide step-by-step instructions on what you're doing, including the site you're visting, and a clear description of what the problem you're encountering is.  Let's take the problems one at a time, and try and work through them.

hi jeromie, i,m glad for your reply. i ran the uninstall from my download list; restarted, ran uninstall again; restarted; ran install plur from download list. opened outlook and clicked on hyper link Click Here to Watch Video. sorry, i thought this would copy the link in full.

anyway the video page opens and i get this: microsoft windows box stating (adobe flash player 11.6 r602 has stopped working). when i hit close program at the bottom of the box i get popup at the bottom stating (adobe flash player 11.6 r602 was closed) to help protect your computer, date execution prevention has closed adobe. while writing this up the video opened up so i played it. i opened another and the same thing happened. when the video was over i got a notice that (plugin container for firefox has stopped working). to answer some of your questions.

            1.  I am using free comodo firewall; free avg 2013; free superantispyware; microsoft security essentials and malwarebytes anti-malware.

            • 3. Re: flash player  beta 11.6
              Jeromie Clark Employee Hosts

This appears to be a self-inflicted problem.

I'm not sure which one of the security products you're running is doing it, but this is the giveaway:

I get popup at the bottom stating (adobe flash player 11.6 r602 was closed) to help protect your computer, date execution prevention has closed adobe.

One of those anti-spyware/privacy applications is configured to prevent Flash Player from running.  When it sees the Flash Player process, it kills it.

So, it basically goes down like this:

              1. You open the browser, which contains Flash content
              2. Within a few seconds, a service monitoring the running processes on your machine sees the Flash Player processes spawn
              3. That application kills it/them
              4. Windows sees the Flash Player process exit uncleanly (since we were killed and did not exit normally), and displays:
adobe flash player 11.6 r602 has stopped working
              5. The program then displays a window to tell you what an awesome job it did -- you know, keeping you from actually using the Internet for anything cool.

At the end of the day, your personal risk tolerance and online behavior will shape the decisions about what you want to allow to run on your computer.  The more "security" you layer on (especially in the form of no-name random freeware that's bolts/hacks behavior to other software), the more spartan your experience will be, and the higher the level of assumed expertise on your part by those tool-makers.  There's a whole industry built around "scareware", with clear parallels to the snake-oil salesmen of yore.

As an alternative to that approach, you might consider running a browser with a strong sandbox like Chrome or Firefox on Windows 7+, running only a minimal set of plug-ins, potentially disabling them on untrusted sites, and sticking with the virus scanner provided by your operating system or computer manufacturer.  At the end of the day, all of these products can only fix or block classes of infections that they know about.  All of the interesting work in security research/hacking are about building an arsenal of exploits that the software industry doesn't know about, and are completely silent and transparent to the end-user.

Personally, I have a dedicated machine for my important stuff (code, banking, etc) and a machine for goofing off.  A $300 laptop is totally worth the peice of mind that my keystrokes aren't being logged when I go to pay my bills, at least for me.

If my goof-off machine gets a virus or something, it doesn't really matter.  When I do encounter a situation where I think the box has been hacked, I don't bother to try and clean it up.  I just format and re-install.  Sure, my virus scanner knows about the infection it detected, but I'm not confident that the initial breach wasn't used to stage newer, more sophisticated footholds that my security software might not know about yet.  I just burn the house down and start over when I think things are sketchy.  Also, I keep good backups (online and locally) to make this kind of approach relatively painless.

Some recommendations that would make a huge impact in terms of increasing your online security would be: use 2-factor authentication for all of the services that support it/migrate to services that do (if your password *is* exposed to an attacker, they still need your phone/token/etc), use unique passwords for each important website (so if one service provider gets hacked, the damage is limited to that site) and use your browser's Private Browsing feature when you don't want to be tracked.

There's really no need for a Flash privacy thingy.  Flash Player respects the built-in private browsing / incognito modes of all major browsers.  Flash can store data within the private browsing session, but that data is in a separate temp directory, and is purged when your private browsing session ends.  This means that you've accomplished your privacy goal, and things *still* actually work right. You can clear all of your cookies and browsing history via your browser, and you can wipe ALL data from Flash at any time from the Flash Player Settings Manager, located in your computer's Control Panel.  Those third-party tools frequently also blow away your Flash preferences, so any security restrictions you've set in Flash get reset everytime it helpfully protects your privacy.

Also, if you're running WinXP, it's just time to stop.  Microsoft Security is absolutely killing it with Windows 8, and Windows 7 is much, much better than XP.

hi, i turned off the security one at a time but this did not affect the flash player problem. i have noticed that even tho the flash player prompt immediately would come up upon clicking a video link, if i wait and do nothing there is a transferring note on the bottom of the page showing that it is loading. this takes about a minuet and then i can usually start the video and close the prompt. so really still no positive results. i am using windows 7. i have tried to use other browsers before but flash problems always seem to arise. still looking for a solution. again thanks.

Cool, Windows 7 makes things easier.

Do you know if your user account have administrative rights, or are you operating with lower privileges (Power User/User)?  If you click Start and type User Accounts, then click Manage User Accounts, it should show you what group you're in.

I'm not sure what the prompt is that you're talking about.  If you can include the language from the prompt, or a screenshot, that would be helpful.  If you click Start > and type "Snipping Tool", you'll get the built-in utility for capturing screenshots.

To share the images, you can click "Use Advanced Editor" at the top of the reply window in the Adobe Forums, there's a camera icon that lets you embed them.

Also, I'm kind of curious to know if you see the same problem in Google Chrome.  Chrome ships it's own version of Flash Player, which might be insulated from the problems you're seeing in the other browsers.

Finally, can you point me to a problem video?

sorry not getting back with you. busy, busy busy! still checking things out. problem is now worse. get blank page when opening outlook videos and then the unresponsive pages popup. i can open vids in either firefox or chrome with no real problems. only problem seems to be in opening vids in outlook. now not even the home page for the vid shows up, just a blank screen with the web site at the top trying to open.

No problem.  Do you see this problem in Internet Explorer?

What version of Outlook are you using?

Cool, I'm still not clear on what you're seeing when you try to use Chrome or Firefox.  You described some kind of prompt and some security dialog that pops up.

Can you give me a screenshot or something?  I don't think these are our dialogs, and I'm confused about what you're actually running into.  A picture would be super helpful.

                            Hello,

                            a)

toolbars like "AVG Security Toolbar" and Realplayer are known to make problems.

                            Try to disable/uninstall it.

                            b)

I see that there are two versions of Flash Player running.

                            File: C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32_11_6_602_108.dll

                            and

                            File: C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32_11_6_602_137.dll

                            You should have only:

                            File: C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32_11_6_602_146.dll

                            c)

                            Update your Intel driver:

i just checked and the 146 is now the only version found now. also the intel download is for xp and i have vista. thanks, and by the way for jeromie, since i installed the beta for ie the flashplayer works for firefox when i changed the default to firefox to copy the wait or kill popup that he requested. for the time being things are working ok. don't understand how firefox got fixed.
