What exactly happens when you try to authorise it? Attach the error screenshot.
It seems your machine is not able to communicate with the adobe activation servers. Are you on a proxy network or behind some firewall?
Disable the security software. Add Adobe Digital Editions to firewall exception and check the same. (http://adeactivate.adobe.com/*)

There are issues with ADE2.0 and quite a few readers.
Try less drasic measures first, but if you can't get anything else to work, try uninstalling ADE2.0, and installing v1.7.2.
(I haven't seen this resolve your particular symptoms, but it does seem to have helped in quite a number of cases.)
Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.

The forum software is sometimes corrupting the link above. There shouldn't be a blank in 'editio ns.html'. The following redirects to the same page: http://tinyurl.com/diged172

I suddenly had this problem this week when I plugged in a new Kobo, with my previously authorised ADE showing as unauthorised for no reason.
In my case I think the authorisation error is probably because my ADE is authorised on my computer, but was showing as not. So I was trying to authorise an authorised device (with a rubbish error message giving no clue). The following process deleted my current authorisation and I just re-authorised and all good so far: -
Use CTRL + SHIFT (i.e. the UP ARROW) + D to bring up the Delete Authorisation Information box - and continue to do that.
Then re-authoise your computer/device.
Thanks to Treborbill for the solution - found in a post on a similar Authorisation problem. And since found full details in the KB: Error "E_AUTH_NOT_READY" | Digital Editions
