I recommend you use Premiere Elements rather than the Organizer to add media from your camcorder to your computer and project.
When you add video using Premiere Elemenets' Add Media tools (the Video Importer), the program will automatically download the necessary components to work with that video.
For best results, shoot only in 1920x1080 AVCHD mode on your camcorder.
Also make sure you've got the latest version of Quicktime from Apple.
But i've read that in that case all clips are directly on the timeline and this is what I want to avoid ... ?
And what is the purpose of Organizer than ?
If you work in Expert view, your clips will not be added to the timeline automatically.
Please try my suggestion and see if it makes a difference.
In that way import is going slow (but that was the same with organizer) but PE is not crashing after import.
And you can indeed choose (enable or disable) for direct placement of the clips on the timeline.
Project was small, so for bigger projects I will certainly use this direct import than. It's also a step less because you don't have to drag the clips from Org. to Elements ...
A pitty that you loose the organizerfunctions but crashing issues is the last that I want :-)
If you use Premiere Elements to import the video from the camcorder to your computer, the Organizer should then work with the clips.
