Start by updating ID to 8.0.1
If it crashes again post the new report at pastebin.com, NOT HERE, and give us a link to it.
Do you have a font manager?
I'm having the exact same problem opening ONLY InDesign.
I am running OS X version 10.8.2. Photoshop, Illustrator, Bridge and everything else open up and work flawlessly, but everytime I open InDesign I get a long error report due to the program "shutting down unexpectedly."
I have multiple projects due in the very near future and am desperate to find a solution. I'm also including the error report in its entirety in hopes someone has had this problem before and was able to find a solution.
Any ideas/input/feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Update to 8.01.
Did you migrate the applications from another machine, or do a clean install? Was it also a clean install of the OS, or an upgrade?
Peter: It is now only the indesign that is causing problems. The upgrade fixed the problem on illustrator. The CS6 was a clean install as was the OS. However I did have CS5.5 on this machine previously. I deactivated it and did an install. It was not an upgrade.
There may not be any prefernce files or the files on the list at Adobe Forums: InDesign crashes at startup, but you should check for them (they're hidden in 10.7 and later, so you may need to read Access hidden user library files | Mac OS 10.7 Lion) and delete what you find. Read about replacing the prefs at Replace Your Preferences
I've done this. I just did it again and it doesn't make any difference. If it tells you anything, the opening screen where it shows the Abobe indesign 6 logo (which is the only thing that shows before it crashes) looks funky. The colors don't seem to be all the way there and the graphic looks strange.
I'm going to ping John. Maybe he has some ideas....
Yes! I beleive this is a bug in the Installer where it leaves ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/Version 8.0 marked read-only, and then InDesign crashes early in the startup process (in the "AdobeBIB" component) when it tries to write its preferences and it fails to do so.
This is a longstanding bug and nobody understands why the installer messes it up.
So the answer is to either trash the above folder, or to hit Cmd-I (File Info) on it in the Finder and make sure it is set to read-write under Sharing and Permissions.
I just got done complaining a lot about this to Adobe, actually, last night. Bugs 3478250, 3478260, 3478263, 3478267, and 3424687.
(Of course, I might be wrong and it could be somethign totally different).
If the above doesn't work, try a new user account on your machine.
Oh, and also, you'll need to hit Cmd-Shift-G in the Finder and type in ~/Library to get to the hidden library folder (though there are other ways).
Yes. Thank you. That was it. It now started up.
Thank you! This was *exactly* the solution I needed!
I’d really thought that I’d never get my ID CS6 working on my system, and contemplated looking for another product; seems counter-productive of Adobe not to flag this issue up, given that the consequences for the user are so profound, but the solution is so simple.
Once again, I am truly grateful for the help!
This was the fix for my longstanding problem of InDesign CS6 on Mac crashing as well. Thanks!
I tried this but id didnt work. InDesign still crashes on startup.
I first set the permissions to 'Read & Write', then tried to launch InDesign. It crashed on startup.
Next I deleted the folder: ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/Version 8.0
I tried to start InDesign, but it still crashed.
Then I deleted the folder, launched indesign, allowed it to crash, and set the permissions on the new folder - and it crashed again.
I used the online chat to discuss the issue with an Adobe support rep. He couldn't resolve it. He sent me to another rep, who also couldn't resolve it. Lastly they asked me to call into the support line. After waiting an hour, I got through to someone and they got disconnected as soon as they said hello. They never called back.
Why am I paying for this?
There are lots of things that can cause crashes, and you may have a different problem entirely. Please start a new thread, describe what you see when you try to start, any error messages you get, and tell us your OS and if ID is patched to 8.0.1 (if it isn't, do that first). Also post one of your crash logs on PasteBin.com and put a link to it in your post.
Thank you SO much, this solved my problem! After going through another whole set of suggestions/instructions on another thread...
O.k. - I think I have a problem very similar to this. However, I do not know what I need to do to fix it. I have read the issues above, but may need someone to walk me through it again. I've posted below the error "InDesign quit unexpectedly" It doesn't hardly even open before it goes automatically to the error window. Please see below:

In future, please put your crash report on Pastebin.com and give us a link. You should probably start a new thread, as well.
Your crash is in CoolType, so may be font related. See Troubleshoot fonts | Mac OS X
Thanks Peter Spier,
My problem was solved, there was a lot of preferences for CS4, CS5, CS5.5
Sorry for the inconvenient.
Thanks a lot ! This solved my problem, InDesign CS6 crashing at startup in Mavericks and El Capitan. Have been looking for tips for a long time and worked all Adobe tips to no avail...
I know ... i am 3 years to late but i had the same problem.
I was stuck on the Adobe InDesign CS6 version 8.0 and can't upgrade to 8.01.
On 8.0 - InDesign crashes on startup.
On 8.01 - it works fine.
Running on a mac with version: 10.12.1
Fixing the problem is easy.
Close InDesign if opened.
Go to: ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/Version 8.0
Rename the "Version 8.0 " folder to "Version 8.01".
Start InDesign and be happy
