          hi
yes you can connect from c# to flex, but it depends on what you want to do, i'm using vb.net and flex, and i connect using httpservice or webservices .

Describe your goals in a bit more detail. I can't even begin with "connect" and "all the functionality".

                hi,

i have a website with data stored in the database... i want to report on this data

i know flex has cool reporting functinalities in the samples on the site

so i want to pull the data from db and send it to flex with whatever configuration I need as the chart type and any required data which i expect to display the data in the report i want

plz let me know if u need more clarification

                thx a lot

                  That's clear.

First, are you sure you need SOAP? Do you plan to make your data publicly availiable and need anonymous third parties to be able to build clients to consume your data using the wsdl?

SOAP based Webservice is complex, the namespace issues make it difficult to use in Flex, and because of the additional xml, it is slightly slower.

If you just need to get your data into Flex, use HTTPService. It is simpler to build and to consume. HTTPService is like the "XMLHTTP" class in .net. Use an aspx page with Response.ContentType = "text/xml", and no visual UI.

I have a couple examples on cflex.net. Search for asp.net.

                    Hi
Tracy, i'm using webservices, because of security issues, but perhaps i'm wrong, my webservices are not for public use so i can use httpservice, doesn't that compromise security in cases where we have to pass sensitive information thru http?

Webservices aren't any more secure inherently than HTTPService . Webservice is just protocol, an xml format, designed for data transport. You can secure web services and you can secure HTTPService. You can require authentication on both and you can encrypt sensitive data on both.

                        Hi
Can you give examples of how can i secure httpservice? And how can i encrypt my sensitive data using httpservice and .net?

Just one more question, i have a menubar wich i'd like to populate with icons, how can i do it dynamically, without having to embed my images on an mxml file?

                          hi
tracy i remember something else, that's what made me opt for webservices, on HttpServices i don't know how to have several operations, unless i send a parameter to aspx page saying wich operation i want.
With webservices i can have multiple operations since every method i write is in fact an operation.

Can you clear me on this? is there a way to have HttpServices requesting several operations?

                            Tracy & batmitra

Thanks for your contribution... it cleared a lot of stuff for me... but I am still missing something

when I use httprequest or webservice I should post on a traget URL... I don't know how to get this URL... so what I need to install/download to get that URL installed on my development machine, and use flex functionalities

                            Thanks a lot,
                            Michael

Michael , sorry but you lost me , i didn't understand your question, could you be more specific about it? What do you want to do exactly?

batmitra, you are right, HTTPService does not have the concept of "operation" . that is provided by the SOAP protocol. But whay do you care? Just do as you say and pass an 'action=" request parameter that tells the aspx page what code to run and return.

                                  hi
thanks for replying, i will be considering the use of httpservices, since it's a lot easier to send data back and forward to flex.
