    Understanding indesign server

Can someone help me understand how the server version of indesign works. Am I correct in thinking that my desktop javascripts can run on the server without too many issues.

I do have access to an indesign server but I currently interact with it via third party software. I upload my javascripts to a particular folder on the server and the third party software runs my scripts.

If I didn't have this third party software how would I run my scripts?

I'm thinking I would need to somehow load up an indesign template file, text file (maybe Word doc) and images to the server, and here's the mysterious bit, get the script to spill the text and images into the template to create the indd file. What would this mysterious bit be? Knowledge in C++?
