How do I change a root style?

By default an install of InDesign had been set to use the US dictionary. Any document created used this dictionary by default... However in Australia we use the UK dictionary.

I can change this in the [Basic Paragraph] paragraph settings, however this just shows up as an alteration to another style (obviously the documents default style). I want to be able to change the document's root style. I have tried to do this by modifying app.activeDocument.paragraphStyles[0] ([No Paragraph Style]) but I get a message saying "Invalid request on a root style".

How do I modify this root style?
