    Help missing

    therayman Community Member

I am writing a track to picture and always loved Audition but went Mac so I lost it up until now. I thought I would give it a go for old times sake.

Things sure have changed since I last used it, no midi or rewire! So sad... I could slave those functions to another computer if there is timecode signal out but I can't find it.

I just breezed through the help files and can't see anything at all about the mixer.

I am trying to select several sliders at once in order to move them as a group. In most DAWS this is a simple shift click and select but that doesn't seem to work in Audition.

Anyone know what key to use to do that?

Also can you reduce the width of the slider channels? I have 28 so far and the track is still growing. Even on a 28" monitor I am running out of room and realy need to see all the signals at once somewhere.

I'm afraid that you've just come up with a list of things that Audition currently can't do, so no, you're not missing anything obvious.

You have to bear in mind that the focus of use for Audition has shifted since you last used it. In many ways, it's surprising that this didn't happen earlier, what with Adobe being a picture-focussed company. But there it is - integration with the rest of the Creative Suite has been the priority for the last couple of releases (ie, since it became dual-platform).

In other words, using it for music generation purposes isn't where it's headed. It's fine (well, nearly) for mixing music produced on other software (a lot of people use Reaper), but that and recorded acoustic music is about it. Most people don't have a problem with fader ganging because they use groups, although I must admit that I can see some benefits in fader ganging too. Rewire went when MIDI went, and unfortunately since the timecode output was MIDI-based, that went with it.

That's the bad news. The good news is that the developers are painfully aware of all of this, and that Audition is still a developing product. It's possible that some of this functionality may return at some stage in the future, but I'd temper this with the fact that it's become very clear that this, of necessity, has a lower priority than developments related to video use. Since, in order to remain viable within Adobe, Audition has to be a component of the CS, then that's pretty much inevitable. But, as it stands, the developers won't rule anything sensible out of hand, so you just have to watch and see how it develops.

MIDI? Rewire? Timecode? Fader ganging? Well, they've been talked about. But, as ever, Adobe keeps its cards close to its chest until there's a press release about a new version, and I'm under a NDA, so that's all I can say about it. Dates for releases are now pre-determined by having to keep in sync with the rest of the CS, and there's an important by-product to this; development has to be done in terms of features that are guaranteed to work by the due date, otherwise they don't get included. IOW, delivery based on version completeness alone, like it used to be, can't and doesn't happen.

Shame it was a very good product before Adobe got their hands on it. As a video artist I would have thought music production was an essential part of any comprehensive suite.

            Here's hoping...
