General Error Message When Installing Flash Player on Mac

    Hmalina

I have a new MacBook Pro.  I have OS 10.8.2.   I cannot get FlashPlayer to download.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Flash Player 11 from the Adobe website.  Doesn't work.  Every time I try to download, I get an error message that says "Error: General Installation Error"   Can someone PLEASE help?  I've spent hours with this and am very frustrated.

Thank you for posting and I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.  Which browser are you using when this occurs?  Is the browser running, if so does the same error occur if it's closed?

Could you please launch your Console application (Applications/Utilities/Console), verify that "All Messages" is selected in the left column, then in the upper right corner type "flash".  Please copy and paste the lines of text that appear in the main log area.

          Thanks,

          Chris

We are actively investigating all Mac installation issues that have recently started appearing.  To help narrow down the problem(s), we ask that user's please generate a few installation logs for us.  The steps below should walk you through the steps.  If you are uncomfortable running these commands and would like to schedule a quick desktop sharing session, please contact me directly at ccampbel@adobe.com.

              1. Mount the Flash Player installer .dmg file
              2. Copy the "Install Adobe Flash Player" file to desktop or any other directory as preferred
              3. Open terminal and cd to desktop or the other directory
              4. Run the following command on terminal: ./Install\ Adobe\ Flash\ Player.app/Contents/MacOS/Install\ Adobe\ Flash\ Player –debug
              5. Once the install has finished, right click on the the Adobe Flash Player.app file and select "Show Package Contents"
              6. Navigate into the /Contents/MacOS folder
              7. Locate the host.developer.log and installer.developer.log and copy them to the desktop
              8. Navigate into ~/Library/Logs/ and locate the file FlashPlayerInstallManager.log.  Copy this to the desktop.
              9. Zip up all 3 files (host.developer.log, installer.developer.log and FlashPlayerInstallManager.log) and email them to ccampbel@adobe.com

              Thanks,

              Chris

That's a bit too sophisticated for me.  Let's do desktop sharing.  Let me know when.  I'll be on the computer the next couple hours and available.

                    Hi Chris,

I also have a user with the same specs and issue. I'm not sure the terminal command succeeded successfully, but I'm sending you an email to follow up with a screenshot. Looking forward to your assistance.

Run the following command on terminal  : “ ./Install Adobe Flash Player.app/Contents/MacOS/Install Flash Player –debug“

The default terminal shell willl not run the above command line.  The shell still sees the spaces between directory and file names.  I had to cd down to the where the install file was, rename the install file, and then run the program there.

To help people troubleshoot or debug failing installs, I would suggest Adobe substitute "_" (under bar) (or some other non-special character) for spaces in all directory paths and files it creates and uses.

From looking at the -debug output, I found that install program was failing because of:

                        a) it assumed there was already existing directory

                        b) existing file could not be written to

                        c) a problem with another program opening to many threads resulting in -10800 error

To further help people troubleshoot or debug failing installs, I would suggest:

                        a) failing output line written back to terminal's command-line be written to one of the log files.

                        b) add an option at the start of Install program to turn on debugging (-debug), and tell the user where the log files can be found

@astirusty - Thank you for pointing out the issue with the escaped spaces in the file name.  I've updated my instructions but you are correct that it would be easier if we had an easier way to generate debug information.  I'll pass this along to the installer team.  Would you mind sending me a copy of the logs that you created?

I deleted the logs after getting Flash Player to install.  I will check the Trash Can to see if the logs are still recoverable.

For me the logs were not helpful, whereas the error message generated from running the Installer from command-line of Terminal was.

I AM NOT HAPPY AT ALL WITH ADOBE.  VERY POOR CUSTOMER SUPPORT.  I have a new Macbook Pro with latest Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  I get a general installation error when it has 55% downloaded.  Since I have only had this mac a week, I called apple support, they checked a few settings and had me try again while on the phone with them.  Same download error message.  They said call Adobe.

In talking with Adobe they wanted to remotely access my machine because they said mountain lion frequently had something they needed to change and for that there would be a fee anywhere from $99 - $149.  WHAT???

@RanchinParadise - No need to pay a fee, we can help you get Flash Player installed.  First I've got a few questions.  What browser are you using to download the Flash Player installer with?  Safari?  Would you be willing to generate and send me some debug logs so we can figure out what's going on here?  Please see this post for instructions:

No, starting in step 3 of your response on the attached thread, it gets over my head.  I dont know what terminal, cd means.

I understand.  If you are interested, please email ccampbel@adobe.com and we can setup a quick desktop sharing session and I'll get Flash installed for you.

                                      Thanks,

The easiest workaround I found is selecting the "Notify me to install updates" option, instead of "Allow Adobe to install updates).  I suspect it has something to do with Mountain Lion requiring a higher level of authentication to install programs, or removing the ability for programs to autoupdate completely (complete speculation on the second part).  Just make sure to check for updates on a weekly, if not daily, basis.

You may also need to go into System Preferences-->Security & Privacy-->Allow applications downloaded from: Anywhere. You'll have to put in an admin account password.

                                          How i solved:

                                          1. Mount the Flash Player installer .dmg file
                                          2. Copy the "Install Adobe Flash Player" file to desktop or any other directory as preferred
                                          3. Open terminal and cd to desktop or the other directory
                                          4. Run the following command on terminal: sudo ./Install\ Adobe\ Flash\ Player.app/Contents/MacOS/Install\ Adobe\ Flash\ Player
                                          5. Insert the password when asked

the error goes beyond my skill, but:

                                            1) delete the installation file you have on the desktop

                                            2) delete the dmg file

                                            3) re-download the package

                                            4) retry the 5 step below

i suppose you have entered the password when asked right?

I have been following the issues with installing the current Adobe Flash Player for Mac on the message boards since my Flash Player ceased functioning correctly this morning.

                                              http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1144035?tstart=0

                                              http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1149789?tstart=0

                                              • I was initially getting the Illegal Plugin message on sites with imbedded YouTube.  I downloaded the Flash Player Uninstaller and that remedied that problem but Flash is still not working

                                              • I've tried installing the Flash Player using the small 1MB download application located at: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

                                              • I have also tried using Terminal as described in one of the Adobe forums

                                              • Both gave the same results (see attached screenshots)  I have tried this several times (each time uninstalling beforehand) and it always stops at the 7% and then gives the 47% on the timeout screen

                                              • It appears to be a downloading issue.  I was not able to find a direct link to the full 16MB Flash Player installer to verify it is a downloading issue.

                                              UPDATE:

                                              • I downloaded the "Download the Macintosh Flash Player 11.5 Plugin content debugger" from the following link and everything appears to be working correctly now.

                                                  Hi Chris,

I just signed up to tell you that I'm also having exactly the same issue as OP. I get a general installation error at 55%.

Running on OSX 10.8.2. Safari 6. A lot of people on ML seem to have this problem. Please fix this asap.

Here's another report of the same general error.   On system MacBookPro, running 10.7.5 and Safari 5.1.7, I download the Flash installer.  Adobe correctly identifies my system as OS X/Safari.

I get the general installation error at 51% every time, and every time the following error is thrown to my Console (system.log):

                                                    *****************************

Feb/08/2013 2:35:15.091 PM [0x0-0x4f04f].com.solidstatenetworks.awkhost: LSGetApplicationForInfo() failed with error -10814 while trying to determine the application with bundle identifier org.mozilla.firefox.

                                                    *****************************

It seems to me there is a disconnect there.  I do not even have Firefox installed on this system.  Nor is my Safari "user agent string" set to Firefox, which is borne out by Adobe's detecting my system as "Safari".  (My user agent string is set to Default).

So, why is the Flash installer even looking for a "bundle identifier org.mozilla.firefox" ??

Having this problem on a fresh install of 10.8.2.

Thanks to @mrdredre, the solution for me was to go to System Preferences, Security & Privacy, General tab, Allow applications downloaded from - make it "Anywhere".

After doing that, I re-ran the installer and it worked just fine.

Crazy that Adobe would release this new installer w/o having it signed so it works without changing this setting.

As the "debug" version is only for Flash content developers, it should mention that next to the link.

Why is is impossible to find the Mac Flash Plugin standalone application?  Can someone please post a link to this as the procedure on following page which the Adobe site directs the user to still does not work.

                                                          Hi John,

I think you’ll be happier with the non debug version of the player.  With the debug version you’ll start seeing errors that normally won’t be displayed when viewing webpages.  I’d recommend installing this version instead:

Thanks for the email, quick reply, and customer service as this seems to be working great.

Hopefully in the future, they will make this link readily available and easy to find online.

                                                            Hi Chris,

I was able to get it to install from the terminal by using sudo.

                                                            $ cd Desktop

                                                            $ sudo ./Install\ Adobe\ Flash\ Player.app/Contents/MacOS/Install\ Adobe\ Flash\ Player

Without the sudo, I got the following error in the terminal:

I had this problem on an iMac running 10.7.5 and Safari 6.0.2.  I was able to solve it by running the download recommeded by jfwmix in reply # 26.

Hope this saves someone some time.

The user reported the problem Tuesday afternoon and I fixed it Wednesday morning, 3/13.

Initially, I could download the small installer, but the main download would hang when 8% completed.

We run ClamXav for anti-virus and Sentry is the active component, I disabled Sentry but the download still failed.

Anyway, I noticed in this thread that Chris Campbell (with Adobe)is trying to help and at one point suggested downloading what I think is a previous version.  I'm about to try that.

Good news:  You DON'T need to reinstall your OS, but.... If you upgrade to OS 10.9, it'll solve the problem. A lot of people are leery of Mavericks, but I've had it since the morning it was released, and I haven't had anything other than a minor annoyance with Finder looking for files to open in some (not all) apps.

And I would not go back to that "Apple tech" because he has no clue what the real problem is. "and it ain't Flash Player"....

Back in October, you installed the 10.8.5 update just like I did. And just like me, you suddenly saw the mach_kernel file in your Mac HD directory. But... unlike me, you weren't taught by the Mac guys at Intuit what it is, and you no doubt trashed it. THAT is the root of all your ills right about now. mach_kernel, is a base file for OS X. Without it, you can't install a lot of stuff and you can't update a lot of stuff.

                                                                                  So... what to do?

Like I memtiioned, upgrading will install a new one and you;re good to go, if you choose to go that route.

If not, and you have a Time Machine, I posted instructions here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1318151

If you DON'T have a time machine with a backup from before October 14, 2013, then you'll need "Plan B".

Post back and let me know your situation, and I'll let you know what we can do to get you back in one piece.

I'll check out your post about TM now.  Thanks very much.
