See my comments testing Red 4.5k on a good PC without a Red Rocket at the bottom of this thread:
Bottom line - single track performance was excellent at 1/2 resolution, but required rendering to use full resolution. 1/2 resolution of 4.5k RED is still pretty awesome to look at BTW!
Also, I have a GTX 480 2GB video card and have always wondered how the full resolution playback would be impacted by one of the newer GTX 4GB cards (i.e. 670 or 680).
Only talking about my own system with two different timelines:
Timeline Full res. 1/2 res. 1/4 res. Single track 4 K unrendered material 20% dropped frames 0 dropped frames 0 dropped frames Highly complex 7 track with 4K unrendered and other material 55% dropped frames 0 dropped frames 0 dropped frames
Full resolution 4K undrendered playback is too much for my system.
even a dual Xeon 3.1GHz (fastest you can get) struggles with full res playback once you start adding effects/layers
Would a 4GB video card help vs. a 2GB video card?
Harm, I'm actually surprised to hear this since you have the #1 system on PPBM. Has nobody attempted to benchmark their dual Xeon 3.1GHz system on the site?
According to this thread, the dual Xeons are supposed to have :obsoleted" Red Rockets:

It shows that fast is never fast enough...
