Operating system? If it's a Mac, upload the crash report to http://pastebin.com/ and post a link here and we'll analyze it.
Workaround: Drag your library items into a CS5 document in CS5, save, open the CS5 document in CS6, and see what you get.
My issue is on a PC. Yes, I have been pulling the item into InDesign CS5 first, then transferring it over to CS6, but that is a real pain with multiple items, and I was hoping to figure out why my existing library doesn't seem to agree with CS6.
Hmm. Well, I don't know what to tell you.
What if you export an item from CS5 as Snippet and open that Snippet file in CS6? Snippets and libraries sometimes the same format internally (there is actually some variation).
What if you drag items into the document in CS5 and then drag them into a new library? Any change?
