Fireworks is fussy with fonts. I have a free font with long descenders and ascenders that must exceed the msquare or something. Fireworks will chop off the pieces unless I add more text (usually lots of blank lines and a period, the blank lines moving the period off my image).
If you're using a Freeware font, it may be that it simply wasn't made well. You might see if you can create paths or vector images in a vector editing program and import them into Fireworks.
Many thanks for the reply!
I just bought a font program (Fontlab) that I haven't learned, yet, but I'm hoping that maybe I can "fix" this and some other fonts with it. We'll see. And I'll experiment with your idea of adding blank lines or something.

For the time and costs of fixing the free font in Fontlab, you might just
want to purchase a commercial font that looks similiar.
Oh, I was thinking of buying it anyway for some other purposes, so this just "pushed me over the edge."
I also was able to get an upgrade price from Fontographer that I used a number of years ago, so it didn't cost quite as much as it might have.
I was very pleasantly surprised to find that Vista would run my old Fontographer with the compatibility modes set down. I installed it on a whim, but it ran just fine.
If you fix up the characters, make sure you make the characters fit inside the m-square. Fireworks will often (but not always) lop off stuff that extends beyond it, even in professional fonts.
Good luck wtih Fontlab!
I'd also like some help with the original problem: Fireworks doesn't seem to be able to display extended characters that are available in the Mac OS X Character Palette. Is Fireworks unicode-aware? All I want is a little arrow character (I don't want a Fireworks arrowhead, thanks), but all I get is either an empty square or a question mark.
At the bottom of the character palette window there's an error that says something to the effect of "can't change font in application, set application font to xxxx and try again." Even when I do this, and then try to re-insert the character, I still get nothing.
When I want special characters, I type them in Word, then copy and paste them into the text editor in Fireworks. But...I'm on Windows. Don't know if that will make a difference.
Thanks for the reply. I tried copy-pasting from Word, but only into the text frame, not the editing window thing. Worth a shot...
