1. Re: How can I open a .wmv file in Premier Elements 9, please
Bill Hunt Feb 16, 2013 1:17 PM (in response to SteveH59)Will Windows Media Player play those WMV files?
If so, then you have the necessary WMV CODEC (installed in the system), but if not, then you will likely have to download and install it from MicroSoft.
Once, all Windows versions came with the necessary MS CODEC's as part of the OS installation. Then, with Vista, MS only included them with particular versions of the OS, but did offer their Vista CODEC Pack, for other versions. Not sure if that is still the policy with Win7 and Win8?
I would NOT go online, looking for "CODEC packs," as some can mess up one's computer. However, the CODEC packs from MS are trusted, and will ONLY install just the necessary CODEC's, and not other "stuff."
Good luck,
Hunt

SteveH59 Feb 16, 2013 5:22 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Hello Bill
Thanks for your message.
Yes, Windows Media Player plays the WMV file.
The files represent a 30-min video installed from a camcorder and saved via Windows Live Movie Maker. I have not edited them, however.
I was hoping to open the WMV file in Premier Elements so I could edit it there and try out some special effects.
Thanks again.

3. Re: How can I open a .wmv file in Premier Elements 9, please
Bill Hunt Feb 16, 2013 6:03 PM (in response to SteveH59)If WMP does play the file, then the necessary version of the WMP CODEC does seem to be installed properly, as WMP (unlike players such as VLC and MediaPlayer Classic HC) does not have any CODEC's of its own.
Why PrE will not Import the file, is a mystery. Have you navigated to the folder, containing that file, and used Get Media, to Import it into a Project, that matches that file? Did you get an error message, and if so, what was that?
Good luck,
Hunt

SteveH59 Feb 17, 2013 4:25 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)Hello Bill
I think I have finally done it. Actually, I have both a .wmv file and an .avi copy of the same movie and I have been able to open both.
I was not trying to open the file in File | Get Media From as you kindly suggested, but through File | Open and then browsing to the directory where the movies were stored.
So, thanks very much for that! I have learnt something today.
I have also managed to locate and save a 78-page PDF Elements manual which looks heavy going, but I will start to make some headway with it.
Many thanks again!

Unlike some programs, such as Photoshop/PSElements, that File>Open can be a bit confusing. That is for Project Files, or .PREL files in PrElements. That is not for Media Files. [In Premiere Pro, the Project File types that would be Opened, will be the PRPROJ files, or even the PREL files, if the version of PrE used to create them is somewhat coincidental with the version of PrPro.]
For more info on the Project Files, the .PREL files in PrE, see this article: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3397716#3397716
Good luck,
