My nearby computer expert took a look at this, and was able to solve the problem for me. He noted...
The problem was a corrupted settings entry in the Windows registry. When the following hex value was deleted, functionality was restored:
Presumably the registry entry got corrupted somehow, but the DNG Converter software should not have been affected in this way. The software should be able to detect and repair/replace corrupted settings.
If Adobe engineers wish to replicate the error, what follows is the corrupted registry entry:

Thank you very much for this. This problem has been going on since I "upgraded" to 7.0.
I've deleted the preferences:
And discovered that the grey blocks have disappeared... Nevertheless i can't get it to open a dialog box to select a folder :/ It just doesn't respond... Other functionalites do respond i.e. the checkboxes.
I've treid reïnstalling diffrent versions but so far has nothing has changed ....
Am I missing something ? any help is much appreciated this bug is driving me insane.
I have the exact same issue, it happened once on opening up with version 7.1 and decided to look for a newer version and downloaded 8.1. 8.1 has worked fine for a number of weeks but yesterday evening and today I get the exact same look as shown above and can't access the fields. This also happens after selected files have been convertered and when I want to use it again I have to 'Control' 'Alt' 'Delete' to open Windows Task Manager to close it down and when I try to close it down it pops back into life again and everything is normal.
So I'm without a Digital Negative Converter at the moment, but I do have another computer on my Network so I'll have to try and use that as mentioned by Paul Wright.
I've deleted the Preferences=hex: etc etc code line on RegEdit at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\DNG Converter\7.0\ and everything's fine now with 8.1 and have just converted some .NEF files successfully.
Where do I go to enter this code to delete?
Hello, i am researching why my DNG converter will not work. I get this, as you said. I am not sure where to find the solution that is listed where is the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\DNG Converter\7.0\Preferences ??
I have tried loading the newest version of DNG 9.0 and that also does not work. HELP!
For those using version 9.0 and or above, I had found out that the easiest way to fix this is to reinstall.
Open your RegEdit.exe ,
On the side panel, access your Adobe folder>DNG Converter folder
Delete the DNG folder and the "Adobe DNG Converter.exe"
Reinstall the converter.
Or you can also access the reg files and use the methods as mentioned by the others.
Can't really find what caused this bug, but hopefully Adobe will fix this issue.
Keep in mind that the method that I shared is only for reinstalling (For some reason, the converter folder is no longer there even after I reinstalled the converter)
Such a stupid problem... URGH!!!
