Seems like it is crashing due to some bad font or a bad joboptions file. I would recommend that you drag the joboptions from the following folder to desktop: Macintosh HD\Library\Application Support\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings\
If you still face issues with the export, then first try printing the file to Postscript. Launch Adobe Distiller and then go to Settings> Edit Adobe PDF settings > Fonts tab. Uncheck Embed All Fonts. Click on Save As "UnembedFonts". Then drag the postscript file from your desktop and try to print to PDF.
Run a Font validation selecting all fonts from Font Book and check for duplicate fonts and bad fonts marked in Yellow and Red. Resolve the duplicates from the File menu of Font Book if any exist. Remove the Red ones because they might cause serious crash issues.
Thank you for replying so quickly. I'll try that asap.
Great tips from @shnath - also, you should clear your InDesign font caches, which is always good to do from time to time anyway. Here is how that works:
shnath is probably correct but surprised no one suggest to double check.
If on OSX 10.8.2, create a dummy account and login in, creates clean instance.
If it works in there, then suggest it is a font or job options issue.
To illuminate the fonts, suggest you use a proper font management tool such as http://www.fontexplorerx.com/mactrial/
