2. Re: "Cannot open the file"
DavidVilares Feb 21, 2013 6:51 AM (in response to Bob Levine)I didn't. But the thing is I think the size was modified whenever the file got corrupted (don't know if it's possible really, but it's my guess - I'm pretty sure the size wasn't 5GB before).

3. Re: "Cannot open the file"
Bob Levine Feb 21, 2013 7:34 AM (in response to DavidVilares)5GB is a monster and I have no idea what happened there. It's always
good to do a file > save as once in a while to get the file size down
and trash all the extraneous garbage that build up.
I can't help fix this but I wrote a blog post last week that you might
want read so you can avoid this in the future:

4. Re: "Cannot open the file"
Peter Spier Feb 21, 2013 7:58 AM (in response to Bob Levine)You seem to already understand that the file is corrupt, so there's little probability that it can be recovered in ID. One possibility, but one I've not used successfully yet, can be found at Adobe Community: Program for restoring corrupted InDesign documents (for Windows only)
Another possibility is the paid service from Markzware: Bad InDesign or Quark File Recovery Submission Form
I have used that service, and it recoverd the text from a very long file successfully, but the index markers were lost, so check your results carefully if you go that route.

Mikhail's program creates a copy of the file, so there is absolutely no harm in trying. Today might be your lucky day

6. Re: "Cannot open the file"
DavidVilares Feb 21, 2013 8:33 AM (in response to [Jongware])I've just tried that program and an error message appeared: "bad signature, file incorrect".
I'm getting used to the idea of never recovering this file, but thank you all for the help anyway.

parol123 Nov 11, 2014 8:11 PM (in response to DavidVilares)Hi!
i have the same problem, my Indd file is seems like 5GB and Indesign say that: "Cannot open the file 1.indd. Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application."
Tried to use INDD recovery, but it says: bad signature, file incorrect
I've been working on that project over a week and the work must be done today. Ahh... donэt wanna do it all again.

Willi Adelberger Nov 11, 2014 10:52 PM (in response to parol123)What have you done to gt such a file size? Did you embed the placed images?

9. Re: "Cannot open the file"
parol123 Nov 12, 2014 12:39 AM (in response to Willi Adelberger)There are lot of pictures, but i dont understand how the size became such big.
I've tried to use hex editor to fix the indd dile, but it unfortunately did not work right.

10. Re: "Cannot open the file"
Willi Adelberger Nov 12, 2014 3:31 AM (in response to parol123)I asked, if you have embedded them.
I hope you have done your tries on a copy of the file.

11. Re: "Cannot open the file"
parol123 Nov 12, 2014 3:43 AM (in response to Willi Adelberger)Yeap, some of them oicures where embered. I wa given word doc with picture in it, so i embered them to show the client how it would look like. I usually make links, but there where lot of pictures, so i wanted to edit and relink them at the end...
I know that the file size is big due to the embered pictures, but 5GB is too much )
Yeap, we experimented on the copy of the copy ) but nothing we could do to the indd file
So, at last i started from begining...

12. Re: "Cannot open the file"
Willi Adelberger Nov 12, 2014 8:34 AM (in response to parol123)I would strongly recommend not to embed images in InDesign. It will cause very often damaged files without any possibility to recover these files. I think you are out of luck with the old file.
If you follow this or other forum, it happens very often, if people embed images instead of link them that they end up with complete file corruption. It happens more often if the file size becomes huge.
