    Facebook app

      Hi All,

A client asked about facebook sharing so I tried to find a publication with this set up. DPS Tips has it available so I hit the share and esentially had to log on to my Facebook account and it posted it on my wall.  No problem there. But this seems to differ to v25 configuration.

However, all the v25 notes talk about connection to my facebook app. Now I can set one up, but, before I go through that is there anywhere that tells me what the user experience is in this configuration - where does the user go, what is the outcome, and where is the sharing.

There's plenty of how-to info here but nothing (I can find anyway) that tells me what the user will see.

The client wants to know what happens - not how do we set iit up.

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. The only difference in v25 social sharing is that if your users go into iPad settings and log in to Facebook, the experience is a little better. They don't need to sign in when they choose Facebook. The users can enter a message to display a link to the article on their Facebook wall. Does that answer your question?

            Thanks Bob,

It might answer the question, I'm not sure. In v25 when we set up Facebook you first setupo a facebook app and use the facebook app number in the folio configuration. I was trying to find out what the facebook app does with dps.

If as you say it still posts on my wall (as in previous versions) then that is fine but why the change to using a facebook app? I can't find anywhere why this change occurred - I assume there is a good reason.

            Thanks Graham

This minor change in v25 improved a small part of the Facebook article-sharing workflow. When iOS6 first launched, a user could go into the device Settings, sign in to Facebook, and possibly have to sign in again while sharing the article through Facebook. With v25, there is no second sign in. That's the only change to sharing articles via Facebook in v25.

It seems like you're asking a different question, though, but I can't figure out what that question is. If you go through the effort to enable Facebook for sharing on the Facebook developer site, you can enable article sharing through Facebook in your app. If it's too much effort, you can just enable article sharing through Twitter, Email, and Copy Link.

If you want to share via Facebook you (the publisher) need to create a Facebook App that is the thing with the ability to post the DPS content links on user timelines. Don't let the name "app" in there sound too scary, it's quite easy to set up a facebook app for this.

This has always been a requirement for Facebook sharing. Nothing changed in v25 that made this a new requirement.

                  Thanks Bob and Neil,

I did look at the facebook app setup and it was easy - I guess I am trying to work out what the facebook app actually does when compared to my usual idea of an app.

If it functionally works as it did in older versions (ie allows content to be pasted on a users wall) while allowing the single log-in to facebook then that's a good thing. And easy to grasp. Bob, if it is as obvious as that then I understand why you don't know what I am asking!

Could I suggest that this is explained simply somewhere. As agency publishers we are often having the conversations with clients that revolve around exactly "how does that work" meaning what does a folio user experience. I don't mean that to be negative about the information that is available but rather that a brief explanation of what it does is really informative. I guess it comes down to - I sell DPS products on their benefits and functionality rather than their technical componetry.

                  So would summarising it as:

" Facebook sharing is handled by setting up a Facebook app and simply linking to this app when using the dps appbuilder. This connection allows users to share folio content by pasting a link to the shared article on the users facebook wall. The Facebook app also allows dps users to login to facebook once - meaning each subsequent time they share an article they do not need to log in to facebook".

be correct? Have I got it right?

                  Thanks

                  Graham

                    Yes, you got it right.

                    Did you read this article?

"To enable social sharing to work with Facebook, register your app with Facebook. Enabling social sharing for Twitter, email, and copy/paste requires no setup tasks. For instructions registering with Facebook, see Setting up a DPS App for Social Networking."

                      Hi Bob,

Yes i did read that one and the articles it suggested. In fact, I setup the facebook app easily using the instructions. So it was very helpful in explaining how to do it. I think the fact that I am not very familiar with facebook apps (who is?) meant that I thought that app actually needed to be set or built to do something - and I don't want to tell my clients that something works in a particular way if I don't know really what happens.

It is very difficult to put yourself in the place of a newbie - I know as when we are publishing content I often have to review content from that point of view - and discount all the knowledge you have. Sometimes the "bleeding obvious" isn't to a newbie.

Thanks for all your help on this.

                      Best
