Need specifics on ways to update sites other than my own

    Fish_Stalker
      Hi Folks,
I have been building sites for myself for awhile and now am having a few people here and there wanting me to actually redo and start over with there site or just do a few updates. I was wondering how you get a persons info from another server and bring that info over to the server I have been using. I want to keep the same url for there companies. This would be if I wanted to totally start over and use the serving I am using but keep the url they have been using. Secondly if I'm just going to be updating for people would I just need the url, user ID, and password to get to thier info? Thanks for your help here!

You work on THEIR servers. There is no reason to move servers just to work
          on the pages.

If you WANT to rehost their sites, then there is a dance you need to do -

          1. Download from the old site and upload to the new site.
          2. Configure email mailboxes on the new site to correspond to email on the
          old site.
          3. Alert all email users to set up a duplicate email account locally so
that they can check email on both the old mailserver and the new mailserver
          4. Access the domain registration account, and redirect the DNS pointers
for the domain from the old host to the new host.
          5. After 72 hours, cancel the old hosting account, and alert the clients to
remove all of the old email accounts.

          That's it....

            Wow..Thanks for the info...
So here is a funny situation..this company has a site that was done for free...its on a personal server....the site is super basic so I'm going to start from scratch ..but want to use the same domain name. How do i use that name or register that name with a new host company if it has already been registered. Secondly overhauling the site..is this going to screw with the search engines and how they find the site if it has totally been changed. Thanks a MEGA ton for you help!

By changing the DNS pointer for that domain name from the old server's IP
address to the new server's IP address.

              > or register that name with a new host company if it has already been

You don't need to change anything with the registration other than the DNS
pointer if you don't want to. Just leave it with the existing registration
              company.

The domain name will stay the same throughout. The only thing you'll have
to worry about is if you change the filenames - they will not appear in the
index for the SE until the site has been spidered again.

If you move a site to a different server, you need the site's Domain Name info.
Where was the site's domain name registered? (at godaddy, register.com, etc. or was it registered
                with the current hosting company...)
Then you need to access the Domain Name account (username and password) and change the DNS (Domain
Name Server) associated with this domain.
The DNS is what points the Domain Name to a server.

Then you need the FTP login and password of the current site to download all the files.
