but when a document is opened it becomes unchecked.
That means that the document was started with it unchecked (or that it was started with it checked and then someone opened the doc, unchecked it, and saved). So checking it with no documents open affects all new documents, but documents that have already been started remember the setting with which they were last saved.

If you need it turned on in all files in a given folder, that script is not hard to write.
(I did it once, years ago, and I'm a lousy scriper. Well, my script turned it off in all files in a given location, but it shouldn't be hard to flip-flop it in the other direction. If I can find it, and if the CS2 version still works in CS6 [dubious], I'll post it for you.)
Thanks, but unfortunately the files are not all in the same location. I'll just let the person know they'll have to continue to check (no pun intended) the preference box on older documents.
