Can't install Flash player with Win 8 and Firefox

I am configuring a new machine with Win 8. I am unable to install the Flash player with Firefox after repeated attempts. Error messages include "Only a single instance of application can run." I close the browser, then open Task Manager to shut down any running instances. Can't find any.

Flash does run on IE, however.

I have deleted all temp files, still no help.

I am at my wit's end. Any solution will be appreciated.
