    MEDIA OFFLINE IN MY MONTORS

    mconnell61 Community Member

      Hello,

I am trying to get some tech support help for an issue I am having with a CS3 Premiere Pro project that involves Media Offline showing in my monitors.  I have been editing this project for a while now using Windows Vista Home Premium OS on a Dell XPS 420 computer but recently I ran into major problems with rendering and other things like constant unknown error compiling messages and frequent abrupt shut downs of Premiere Pro while I was  editing.  So I changed my operating system to Windows 7, reinstalled all CS3 programs, reinstalled all the drivers for my sound card, graphics card (ATI  Radeon HD 2600 XT), etc...

I then opened up my ppr project file I saw that the entire project is visible in the timeline but the program monitor and my 2 external viewing monitors have a red screen that says Media Offline?  I tried rendering a segment and playing it but I still see Media Offline in  the monitors?  I can see that the footage does render and play but I cannot see  it in my monitors?  I know the footage is not offline because I can see each shot in the timeline, and when I double click on a shot it does show up in the source monitor where it can be played and also viewed just fine in the 2 external monitors?  When I try to play that same clip where it is edited in the timeline I see Media Offline?

I have done some research on the Media Offline subject using the Adobe knowledge base and I have tried everything I have learned with no success.  I tried selecting the entire project and the right clicking and clicking the enable feature off and on but that did not work.  It does bring the project back into my monitors but the framing is off showing 2/3 of one frame and 1/3 of an adjacent frame?  It also flickers in and out if I play it.  I then click on undo and I am back with the same problem of all my monitors showing Media Offline.

I also tried the suggested method of selecting the entire project and then moving it slightly and undoing the move but received the same outcome as clicking on and off the enable feature.  I also have made certain that all of my drive letters are the same as they were with the previous OS.

I have 7GB of RAM and 1TB of available storage space so those issues seem to not be factors.

Is it possible that my ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT video card is just not good enough to work with the newer Windows 7 OS to display playback of the timeline footage?

Why am I able to see the edited footage in the timeline but can only see Media Offline in my program monitor and 2 external viewing monitors?  The project is there, I just cannot see it when I play it?  How can I fix this problem of not being able to see my footage in my monitors?

Any help with this problem by anyone would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks,

      Michael

First, take a look at this article (if you have not seen it already), on Media Offline: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3561281#3561281

          It lists some possibilities.

Also, for Error Compiling Move, see this Adobe KB Article: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4172254#4172254

Those would be good starting points, and if you eliminate ALL of those possible causes, maybe others will have more ideas to add.

          Good luck,

Michael, Have you found any helpful information?

I've been having the same problem.  I'm using CS5.5 on a Mac.  Usually the problem came up for me when I imported files from an exterior hard drive.  I just had my whole project turn to the red "Media Offline" window. These files were imported directly from my camera.  My computer didn't go offline.  This is a first.

            Would appreciate any helpful information.

              Michael,

I am not sure where these particular media files were located, when Imported. It seems that they were on an external HDD, but then I am not certain of that.

When a file is Imported into PrPro, a link to the original file is created, and this link is an absolute Path, in that every aspect of it's location, name, etc., MUST be maintained, or the link will be broken, and then the Media will show as Media Offline. In PC-speak, the HDD's drive letter must be maintained, exactly as it was, at the time of Import. In Mac-speak, that is the Volume. Being a PC-only guy, I am not sure of all variables on a Mac for Volume names, so you will have to investigate that aspect. However, if any part of the Path (probably goes by a different name on the Mac) changes, one must manually re-link via the new Path.

Can you give us the complete details on where the files were, when Imported, and then any change that might have taken place?

              Thank you, and good luck,
