When one encounters a GUI display issue, the first recommend course of action is to update the video driver. That might, or might not solve the issue, but it does get one of the main causes out of the way early.
What video card do you have, make and model?
What is the installed video driver, number and date? Is that the latest from AMD/ATI, or nVidia?
