1. Re: Object not Casting Shadow - Even though Enabled
Mylenium Mar 21, 2013 9:01 AM (in response to perfectblue)Well, but have you actualyl a layer that catches the shadows? 3D shadows only are cast on otehr 3D layers, not rendered as a blind buffer effect. If you need that, simply use one of the effects, otherwise you will have to create a shadow cather layer... And also check your hand for layer styles or otehr stuff that could break 3D rendering order.

perfectblue Mar 21, 2013 9:12 AM (in response to Matt Dubuque)@Myelenium, every layer including the background is a 3D layer at the moment. It should be catching shadows.
@Matt Dubuque, Thanks for responding, its set to adaptive resolution

4. Re: Object not Casting Shadow - Even though Enabled
Rick Gerard Mar 21, 2013 11:24 AM (in response to perfectblue)Is the light set to cast shadows? Is the background laer set to receive shadows? Is the background layer far enough away from the hand layer to let the shadow form? I am guessing that the hand layer and the background layer are on the same plane.
My usual approach for this kind of project is to set a white solid as a 3D layer, offset it in Z from the layer that is casting the shadow, match the perspective by tilting the layer, then switch the blend mode to multiply. This is how you cast shadows on 2D layers.
Sometimes temporarily add a grid effect to the white solid helps line it up to catch the shadows at the correct angle.

5. Re: Object not Casting Shadow - Even though Enabled
perfectblue Mar 21, 2013 12:06 PM (in response to Rick Gerard)@Rick Gerard,
Light Source: Cast Shadows Enabled
Background Layer: Accepts Shadows Enabled
Hand Layer: Casts Shadows Enabled
ZSpace: Hand Layer in front of Background
Light source is also further away than the hand layer so it should cast a shadow.
Here is an image to illustrate. Not sure what im doing wrong, on one of my older files the hand is casting a shadow just fine.

EDIT it seems this becomes an issue as soon as I precomp the hand. If I use the raw hand.png the shadows cast. As soon as I precomp it goes away, I ensure the hand precomp is 3D enabled in both the main comp and in its own cop nested with accept shadows on.

6. Re: Object not Casting Shadow - Even though Enabled
Rick Gerard Mar 21, 2013 12:33 PM (in response to perfectblue)Pre-compose the hand, leave the pre-comp 3D and collapse transformations.
A screenshot of the entire project including layers would be helpful if this does not solve the problem.

8. Re: Object not Casting Shadow - Even though Enabled
Andrew Yoole Mar 21, 2013 2:50 PM (in response to perfectblue)The issue is the way you've nested your precomps. The light is not in the same 3D environent as the layers which need to cast shadows.
Resolve this by putting a light into the Main Comp. You may not need the light in your Background comp once this is done.

Dave LaRonde Mar 21, 2013 3:06 PM (in response to Andrew Yoole)...Or just use AE's Drop Shadow Effect on the hand layer. It's an oldie but a goodie.

10. Re: Object not Casting Shadow - Even though Enabled
Rick Gerard Mar 21, 2013 3:43 PM (in response to Dave LaRonde)All of your lights and cameras should be in the main comp. The nested comp is only for the background layer. I'm not sure why you need to pre-compose it.
