    Colour won't change?

    SteveH59 Community Member

      Hello

I am using the following method to change the colour of part of my JPG image: click on Quick Mask, colour in the image, click on 'Edit in Standard Mode', go to Select, click on Inverse, then Image, Adjustments, then Colour Balance.

      - nothing happens!

What am I doing wrong, please?

      Thank you.

      Steve

Is the Tone Balance section correctly set? So, if you're selecting light areas, do you have Highlights selected? Also ensure that the preview button is checked! And that you're on a bitmap layer (Quick Mask allows you to make a selection on adjustment layers)! Or did you mean that you can't actually bring up the Adjustment window after making the selection?

            Hello Dave

            Thanks for your reply.

It's just a normal little jpeg - I was trying to replace the black wolf with a slightly less black/slightly more blue colour. On other photos the procedure I followed seem to work.

I have just checked again and thought for a moment that the layer was locked, but it's not.

            Here's the photo.

What is the color mode of that jpeg?

Ah, it's Greyscale - but the problem is that there are no pixels with colour to be adjusted, I think. If you use Hue Saturation adjustment to up the Lightness, and then use Colour Balance, you should see changes to the black. You may be better off refining the selection and adding the desired colour as a new layer. An easy way to make a selection for this image would be to option/control click on one of the RGB channels' previews (the little box beside the name with a picture in it), and then inversing that selection if needed.

                  Hello

                  Thanks again.

This ' If you use Hue Saturation adjustment to up the Lightness, and then use Colour Balance, you should see changes to the black' sort of works, although at a point the moon begins to shine through.

This is what I can see:

I will try to have a play about with it using your suggestion.

                  Thanks!

Ah, my apologies, I may not have been very clear - I'll try harder this time! The reason that Colour Balance is not working in my opinion is because the RGB values of the white and black are 0,0,0 and 255,255,255. If you change these values to 127, 127,127 using the Lightness adjustment in Hue Saturation, or another tool, you'll find that you can manipulate the colour using Color Balance again.

What I wrote above about selection is a little redundant - although it will allow you to make a quick selection which you'll then have to invert. Remember that on a mask or channel, white reveals, so apple/control clicking on the channel thumbnail will select the white pixels.

                    Best wishes,

                    Dave

Many thanks, Dave for all your help.

I'll try that out this evening.

                      Cheers!
