    problem updating asset within template

    backpack45scb

I'm a Dreamweaver 5.5 newbie on Win XP. I have assets setup for the repetitive material in the body of my pages. I created a template that contains these assets. I can create a new page with the template and everything works as expected. However, when I update an asset, save it and click update, the asset is updated, but the template and its associated pages don't change. Is this something I should be able to do, or am I unclear on the concept?

      Thanks for any thoughts.

What happens when you open the Template and update the link to the revised Asset?

When you say "Asset" are you speaking of a Library item? In what way are you updating the asset? And why, when you update the asset, would you expect the template to change?

We may need to see the code to answer your question. Can you post a link to a live page?

When I open the template and do Modify>Library>Update Current Page, I don't see the revised asset contents appear in the template.

It might be relevant, though, that when I created the template, I replied No to Update Links. I wasn't sure at the time, and didn't want DW to mess with the affiliate links I had on the page. I'm thinking now that I should have replied Yes.

When you open the Template? Or a template child page? Can we see the code on the template page?

Yes, that's relevant and would explain why changes to the template do not propagate to any child page. This is not a usual selection for using templates.

I am talking about library item assets. I have several in the non editable parts of my template.

Before I had the template, I just had pages with assets. I would update an asset and when I saved it, there would be an Update Pages query and I would reply yes. It would then update all the pages that contained the asset. When I made a template with assets in it, and then made a new page from that template, I expected that when I updated and saved an asset, and replied update pages, that would update the template and all pages generated from that template.

I haven't yet put the page up live. I'm looking at the html for the page in DW and can see that the assets haven't been propagated thru to the page.

Copy the code on the template page and paste it into a reply.  That'll tell us what's happening with the library item. The workflow that you describe is quite normal - combining library items with templates can be a very powerful tool.

Thanks for info on templates & linking. I'm going to recreate my template replying Yes to links and look at things again.

However, let me also say that I can see no strong argument or real benefit for putting a library item into a non-editable region of a template. What is that going to do for you that simply having the library item's code in that same non-editable region (i.e., without the library item) would not do?

Understand your point on why have the assets unless I have multiple templates. For me they are there mostly because they were used in all my pages before I considered templates. Then I decided I wanted standard info in the head part as well as the body, so converted existing page to template. May revisit use of assets later.

Re my problem updating asset within template, I discovered the issue, though not sure of the solution yet. I have multiple assets in the template. One asset is in the editable part of the template. On the assets in the fixed part of the template, I can update them and update propagates thru to the template and associated child pages just fine.

When I look at the asset that I put into the editable part of the template, now I realize that it is showing a highlighted error for invalid markup. I assume it is telling me that assets are not allowed in the editable part of a template:

Logical, but incorrect.  That's just normal markup for a Library item insertion point - they are given (usually) a straw-colored highlight. I see no troublesome code in that brief snippet.

(Nested templates *and* library items - boy your pages are really pimped up!)

I'll paste in the template _simpletemp1.dwt followed by the problem asset SampleText.lbi - within SampleText.lbi I changed all the class="clear" to style="clear:both;".

                              The resulting web page is:

                              http://backpack45.com/_simple2005-04-03.html

Ignore the fact that the change was not worthwhile. The question is why didn't it propagate to the template? A change I made to the Bottom asset propagated ok.

                              _simpletemp1.dwt follows:

There are indeed problems on this page.

In DW, a search for "<div" produces 27 hits, while a search for "</div" produces 29 hits. Further, validator finds a number of errors. Before working further with this or any other page, you need to fix these errors, unfortunately! Because of the broken <div> structure, DW is not recognizing the Library item that is not properly updating changes.
