In a word, No.
If there's a placeholder inthe template file, there needs to be a corresponding field in the data file. You can have fields inthe data file that don't exist in the template, but not vice versa.
That's what I was afraid of, thanks for heading off my continued efforts to make it work though : )

This solved it for me:
Go to Window>Interactive>Hyperlinks
Then DELETE all of the hyperlinks that don't have an "A" next to them.
Warning — make sure you are not deleting hyperlinks that are intended to be in your document. Only delete the ones corresponding to your old merge dataset.
Here was my list — note Hyperlink 37 and Hyperlink 7 — those were the offenders. Delete them and retry your merge.
