    Problem with Spry Gallery Thumbnails

      Regardless of what I check when creating an album, it's using the main images as the thumbnails - not the actual thumbnails defined in the "thumbs" directory.

      This is a problem for two reasons - first, it's going to load all the full size images to the page as soon as the page opens, which can get darned slow if there's a lot of them. Second, my thumbnails are often *not* small versions of the full image, but maybe just a small part of the main image.

      in my XML file - the default seems to be
      path='myPICS' hasThumb='false' thumbSrc=''

      If I change this to:
      path='myPICS' hasThumb='true' thumbSrc='thumbs'
      or
      path='myPICS' hasThumb='true' thumbSrc='myPICS/thumbs'

      ...I still get the full size image used as the thumbnail.

      Any ideas?

          In the Export Options tab/pane of the script do you have Export Thumbnails ticked?

            ok - I just ran a few tests and sure enough, you are correct - the end result is that the thumbs point to the SAME full version images.

              So where in the generated code can I change the path so the thumbnails are used? I've already made a lot of alterations to customize it to my needs, but so far, haven't been able to trace down exactly where I could redefine the path.

                Open up slideshow.xml (in your fav editor)
                1. where the thumbSrc='', now change it to thumbSrc='thumbs'
                2. you can leave hasThumb='false' because for some reason it is not being utilized, that I can figure out.
                3. Save the changes

                Open up the index.html file (in your fav editor)
                1. locate the thumbnails div and change what I have bolded

                <div spry:repeat="dsSlides" onclick="HandleThumbnailClick('{ds_RowID}');" onmouseover="GrowThumbnail(this.getElementsByTagName('img')[0], '{@thumbWidth}', '{@thumbHeight}');" onmouseout="ShrinkThumbnail(this.getElementsByTagName('img')[0]);"> <img id="tn{ds_RowID}" alt="thumbnail for {@src}" src="{dsAlbums::@path}/{@src}" width="24" height="24" style="left: 0px; right: 0px;" /> </div>

                To

                <div spry:repeat="dsSlides" onclick="HandleThumbnailClick('{ds_RowID}');" onmouseover="GrowThumbnail(this.getElementsByTagName('img')[0], '{@thumbWidth}', '{@thumbHeight}');" onmouseout="ShrinkThumbnail(this.getElementsByTagName('img')[0]);"> <img id="tn{ds_RowID}" alt="thumbnail for {@src}" src="{dsAlbums::@path}/{dsAlbums::@thumbSrc}/{@src}" width="24" height="24" style="left: 0px; right: 0px;" /> </div>

                In sum, for the above code block, change the source (src) tag block to

                src="{dsAlbums::@path}/{dsAlbums::@thumbSrc}/{@src}"
                ----------------------------------------------

                hope this helps
                let me know

                  Ok, that did the trick - as long as you edit your XML file for each album as well:
                  hasThumb='true' thumbSrc='thumbs'

                  Thanks so much for your help!

                  After al that, I'm thinking this may not be the best way to go for a photo album though. It looks nice, but I'm concerned that I see no way for the images to ever be indexed by the search engines (correct me if I'm wrong).

                    No problem

                    It's not 100% perfect, and as you pointed out, the Fw script needs correction, yet alone updating, Spry itself is updated and improved to 1.6 now - http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/home.html. I believe, like all other Ajax solutions, you may still have the issue of search engine indexing.
