ENTER commits the text.
RETURN goes to the next line, and Command-RETURN acts just like ENTER (for laptops that don't have the full key set).

Im sorry I was unclear - To clarify I was referring to having the horizontal type tool (or any of the type tools) selected, and pressing enter or return.
It highlights the font family field as per the screenshot. Is there any way to change this?
The tool doesn't matter - they all act the same way: enter to commit, return for next line.
When you press enter to commit the type, it goes back to targetting the font name.

No, those functions are hard coded for the type tool.
The targetting of the font name is just what it reverts to after you have commited your text edit.
Am I reading the problem correctly: the Return key is commiting the Type despite you not holding down Cmd?
