    Authorizing problem in ADE

    lbnl Level 1

I can't authorize my Windows laptop in ADE. Earlier I used ADE  without problems to transfer epubs to my Kobo, but now I've bought a DRM epub which won't open. I've hit "authorize computer" and entered my adobe ID, but the authorisation process won't complete. Sometimes it says there is no internet connectivity (which there is..), or it starts the authorisation process but won't finish it, this can go on for hours, and I can only break it through the task manager.

I've tried deleting and reinstalling, Ctrl-D, but to no avail. Does anybody have any suggestion? Thanks so much!

The magic formula is ctrl-SHIFT-D (cmd-shift-D on Mac).  Is that what you tried (in which case typo above), or did you try without the shift?

If you want to transfer non-DRM books you might try using the free Calibre software instead of ADE.  Different people like different software, but I find it much better than ADE.

Thanks for your quick reply and the idea of using Calibre for non-DRM books!

But yes, it was a typo, I used ctrl-shift-D - just tried it again to make

            sure.

The literal error message is, (in Dutch),  "ADE cannot connect to the

activation server, please check whether you are connected to the internet".

Do you have any other ideas?

That can be associated with Firewall problems.

Either turn your firewall off for a bit and try again,  or explicitly let ADE through the firewall.

Sometimes the Adobe server is genuinely down; but that doesn't usually last very long.

If you have already, retry a few times over a day or so.

Thanks, I put ADE on the list of OK programs in my firewall, and also

checked the antivirussoftware, only still am getting the same message ..

but will retry over the next few days.

Just for the heck of it I tried installing ADE 1.7.2 instead of 2.0, This

                  immediately gives me the message

                  E_ADEPT_IO ActivationServiceInfo Error%20#2032

                  Does that ring a bell?

Doing a quick check there are comments that this can be to do with your proxy server settings.

There are even claims that downloading ADE using Internet Explorer rather then Chrome or Firefox can help: sounds extraordiary but worth experimenting.

Curiouser and curiouser - yes, this worked very well, in Internet Explorer

with LAN connections set to "automatically detect", it was suddenly

possible after downloading ADE for the umpteenth time to not only authorise

the laptop but also the KOBO. Very smoothly, unbelievable, so thanks very

much for hunting this out for me!

I'm just not euphoric yet because the epub (.acsm) now cannot be downloaded

                      from the server, ADE saying

Error in obtaining licence. Communication problem with licence server:

                      E_ADEPT_INTERNAL

, but this may be a problem with the online bookshop, I've asked them to

look at it. Of course if you can solve this problem for me too, you are

                      really my hero....

                      to be continued,

The Adobe DRM team are the experts at taking something that needs to be simple for a non-computer person to use, and making it so that it is almost impossible to use even for someone really experienced.  'ADEPT' seems the most inapt name for the Adobe DRM mechanism.   Adobe Digital Experience Protection Technology:  they want to protect you from the experience of actually reading your digital book?

There is a horrible suggestion for E_ADEPT_INTERNAL at http://helpx.adobe.com/digital-editions/kb/error-e-adept-internal-download.html

I think I'd wait to see if the bookshop can help first before trying it, though.

Alas.. The bookshop can't help me and directs me to Adobe, effectively this forum as I understand. So I tried your "horrible suggestion", without effect.

I also checked whether I could access https://ebook.lightningsource.com at all, without the specific ebook code, and that was not a problem.

                          Are there any other suggestions?

Just checking for clarification how far you got down the process ...

                            1. Have you been unable to download even the initial .acsm file?
                            2. Did you download the .acsm, but now cannot use it to download a DRM .epub file?
                            3. Or have you even got a .epub file, but it refuses to open/read it?

Is it just the one book that is failing, or are new DRM books (bought/library) failing to work with ADE and the Kobo as well?

Between your patience and my persistence this should work in the end..

                              1. I've got the initial .acsm file.

                              2. I can't use it to download the DRM epub file.

2a If I try to download the epub through the bookstore interface, when connecting to the website ebook.lightningstore.com  the error message I mentioned pops up (the E_ADEPT_INTERNAL one).

2b If I doubleclick the .acsm file on my laptop in the Windows explorer, ADE opens and starts the downloading process of the epub file, quoting the book title, but then the download process stalls, the same way as the authorisation process stalled earlier.

Maybe another but slightly different proxy/connectivity settings issue?

This is the only failing book.

I have not bought any other DRM books yet and for obvious reasons am currently not planning to. Could've physically bought and read more than one paper book already in this time.

The bookstore will not provide me with a replacement copy of the .acsm file because it is not corrupt according to their information.

Another possible way is to install the Sony Reader software

                                https://ebookstore.sony.com/download/

That is designed to be used with Sony eReader devices, but I think it will work fine anyway.

Not a particularly good bit of software, but I seem to remember hearing of a case where ADE always hung in the process of downloading a .epub file from a .acsm but the Sony reader would succeed in the same task.

Try: if it works you should be able to get it onto the Kobo.

Installing it was no problem, but doubleclicking the .acsm file in the Reader gave an error message: the download failed.

I then bought another book, with an .acsm file and managed to download the actual file both with the Sony Reader and with ADE!

So it may have been the particular file itself after all, although the store denies it. Perhaps this book was not meant to be read by me, very advanced digital protection as you suggested. I stop here and will get a refund for the book.

                                  Thanks again for your help!
