Won't playback sound EXCEPT when I open preferences menu item

The weirdest thing has started to happen. I will have an audio file on my timeline (sometimes in a multitrack session too). When I hit the space bar for play I get the message at the bottom that says "playing" and all the indicators claim it's playing, but the progress bar is not moving on the timeline and no sound comes out.

BUT if its stuck in this mode and I go to preferences, the file begins to play. Unfortunately I can't do anything with the file because I have the new dialogue box open; when I close it the file stops playing...

      Very annoying...

Any ideas? This worked fine a week ago! Not sure what I might have changed...

When Audition indicates that it's playing, but nothing happens, it means that for whatever reason, it's disconnected from the audio driver for your sound device. But, why Audition would start playing again when the preferences folder is opened is certainly a bit strange... one possibility is that if you've run the Windows verification process recently, it could have screwed with your sound device driver - that's happened to somebody here recently. So, it might be worth reinstalling that, and trying again.

The other alternative is to reinstall Audition, and see if that makes any difference.

This is helpful; thank you. My sound card died on my laptop so I use the cheapie USB speakers and i will bet its something to do with their driver... I will play around....

EDIT: I just tried this again; and I went into my audio hardware tab in preferences, selected a DIFFERENT output driver, and then changed it BACK to my original choice... and suddenly everything began working again! Yay!
