advantages of PPRO 5.5 over 5.03 please

    tfi productions 44 Level 1

      hello

i'm still trying to decide how to update 5.03

at this point i'm thinking cs6 is out (too many issues with avchd)

i don't want to join the cloud

so i'm trying to track down a boxed academic version of 5.5 production premium for windows

can users comment on the advantages of 5.5 production premium compared to 5.03

5.5 would allow me to use x264pro for one thing

(sorry if this is a redudant post, i'm trying to reassure myself)

      i am reviewing this link

but still would like users comments

      thanks in advance...j

CS6 is a significant advance over 5.5.  You should at least download the trial and see if you experience any issues.  Not all AVCHD media is affected.

            hello Jim

i agree that not all avchd is affected with the spanned clips issue

but the thread that states that avchd footage lags and isn't responsive even on a beast of a system

            has me worried...

            http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1216612?tstart=0

i am reluctant to install trial cs6 to check because my 5.03 is so stable i don't want to risk it

            cheers, j

As a user who skipped CS5.5, I am inclined to recommend the same.

As I recall, the biggest wow feature for 5.5 was Warp Stabilizer.

The most important core changes to Premiere came with CS6.

If you do not plan to subscribe to CC, and you still want

to update your CS5.0.3, I think you should move to CS6.

There were many advances from CS5 to CS6 that make it worthwhile.

And, unless your primary media source is affected, you shouldn't

be too afraid of the AVCHD / spanned clip bug in CS6.

If you happen across media CS6 can't handle well, just keep

CS5 installed for flipping any problem media before editing in CS6.

I have CS5.0.3 and CS6.0.3 installed together without conflict.

              My 2¢

but the thread that states that avchd footage lags and isn't responsive even on a beast of a system has me worried...

It also has me skeptical.  I do experience a slight lag with AVC media compared to MPEG2 or DV.  But nothing that makes the software unusable, and in truth, nothing that I wouldn't expect from such computationally difficult compression.  That's why I suggested giving it a try.  For me the lag is very minimal (1/4 to 1/2 second maybe on my i7 2500K) and so far only affects GOP footage.  I'd certainly not want to give up all the benefits of CS6 on that account.

Spanned clips are a different issue, and if your media is affected then CS6 really does become largely unusable without transcoding that footage.  But again, test first.  Not all spanned media is affected.  (Mine isn't.)

CS6 will not interfere with 5.0.3.  The two can happily coexist on the same system and in fact many people have multiple versions installed.

                  hello,

i do appreciate your helping me out

i guess it is a matter of quantifying the 'lag' of avchd (independent of the spanned avchd issue)

here is a reponse about it (the thread is linked afterwards)

                  4. Thrill Media,

If you don't "HAVE" to have CS6 right now and are slammed with projects, then I would wait and see if they fix it in the next release. I use a quite a bit of AVCHD and it is much less responsive in CS6 than it was in CS5. We have had several updates and it is still an issue... hoping Adobe makes it right.

@Jim:  could you briefly explain GOP footage...i use canon hfs20 vixia avchd 60i camera that records as mts files.  i plan on sticking with them until i make a move to a 4k camera in the future.

I'm no software engineer (any more), but I'm curious what makes you think it's a bug and not just unrealistic expectations of editors wanting DV performance out of the very difficult to edit AVCHD media?  I mean, is there something going on at the software or driver level that you're been able to test?

I ask because I see similar lags when I work with 12 GOP patches on my GH2, but with I-frame patches the performance is significantly better, almost DV-like.  Same codec, different encoding scheme, so I just attributed the performance lag to the nature of the media.  I'd be interested to know if you're seeing things 'under the hood' (as it were) that lead you to a different conclusion.

                  2) if i do install the trial cs6 does it install into it's completely own folder?

also, besides the main PPRO folder i'm concerned with all the other folders PPRO installs

in terms of messing up my cs5.03 installation

3)by installiing the PPRO 6.03 update/trial  will i 'see' the bugs if my camera/footage is affected?

i would hate for everything to be groovy with 'the trial' only to buy the production premium

                  and have it be 'whack'

thank you for taking time to further explain, j

CS6 will install everything to a different folder.  Nothing will be shared with older versions.  For example, any plug-ins you have for CS5 will need to be reinstalled for CS6 if you want to use them there.

The trial works just the same as the paid version, you won't see any performance difference between them.

CS6 installation goes into its own folder structure,

and does not conflict at all with CS5.0.3.

As I mentioned in my post, I have both installed without conflict.

by installiing the PPRO 6.03 update/trial  will i 'see' the bugs if my camera/footage is affected?

If you do a LONG roll (20-25 minutes) that requires clip spanning

at 4GB, then you should see the bug if your camera is affected.

...any plug-ins you have for CS5 will need to be reinstalled for CS6 if you want to use them there.

For plugins that do not require running an installation program,

you can make 'shortcuts' instead of copying each plugin

for use in both CS5 and CS6.

Create shortcuts for all files/folders from:

                        C:\Program Files\Adobe\Common\Plug-ins\CS5\MediaCore

                        Add them to:

                        C:\Program Files\Adobe\Common\Plug-ins\CS6\MediaCore

They all answer this question directly.

                            does it uninstall easily/completely?

                            Yes.

                            I have never needed one.

can anyone state what the 'functional content' is for PPRO please? (211MB)

and to where did it install?

                                      ( i had everything install to C:PROGRAMS:ADOBE:CS6)

i am going to try to apply the most recent updates and will post back...

thanks again for all your help...

                                        hello,

all the current cs6 updates installed 'successfully'

except ILLUSTRATOR 16.03...any ideas why not?

also, i guess MOCHA FOR AE is gone...

i have found my 'spanned clip footage' to try in PPRO cs6

it is one continuous take of a graduation ceremony

that filled the built in hdd of a canon vixia hfs20 avchd camera

we'll see how it goes, cheers, j
