Elements 11 will not playback video

    wadeleverett3 Level 1

just installed elements 11 and have added an mpeg4 file.  all appears good but can not playback the video.  only a white screen where the video should play.  if i double click the clip the edit window  behaves the same.  How do I get the video to play?  no error messages are displayed.  and the audio plays normally.

What computer operating system are you running Premiere Elements 11 on (including 32 or 64 bit)?

Is your video card driver up to date?

What are the properties of your .mp4 file? If you do not know, please get a MediaInfo properties readout

          http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en

          We are looking for:

VIdeo compression (that .mp4 is just a wrapper format not the video compression)

          Audio compression

          Frame Size

Frame Rate, including interlaced or progress; if interlaced, upper or lower field first

          Pixel Aspect Ratio

          Duration

          for starters

Does the file playback OK in your computer players?

Do you have similar problems with other video of its kind or other kinds? Is the problem specific to this one video?

The answers to the above will prove helpful to finding the reason for the problem.

What you might want to try is renaming the file extension to: mts, .m2t, .m2ts, .avi, or .mov to see if the renamed file imports into Premiere Elements 11 and displays its video.

          Thanks.

            Welcome to the forum.

The answers to ATR's questions will be very important. Please pay close attention to the question about your video driver - the more detail that you can provide, the better.

I have one more: do you have the latest version of Apple's QuickTime Player installed?

            Good luck,

What you might want to try is renaming the file extension to: mts, .m2t,

.m2ts, .avi, or .mov to see if the renamed file imports into Premiere

Elements 11 and displays its video.  The video imports to elements fine

with no errors and renders fine with no errors.  In the playback window it

shows the video when paused.  When I move the time line cursor the video

window reacts as you would expect by showing the frames as you move past

them.  The issue is when you click play under the playback window, it turns

white and you hear the audio with no video.

Let us see if the QuickTime install which is a must helps us any.

But, I have something else for you to look at also.

From what I read in your posts here, you are dealing with a MPEG2.mp4 video file. If I am correct on that....Wherever you have the file saved on the hard drive, go there and rename the file extension of the file only. Then import the variations into Premiere Elements to determine if one of them will import without issue

                        MPEG2.mpg

                        MPEG2.avi

                        MPEG2.mov

We will continue to watch for your results.

                        Thanks.

I have now updated to the latest quicktime drivers.  No Change.

I notice when I startup elements 11 and load a project that the play back

window is white.  If I click It, it will show the video currently under the

cursor.  Then if I move the cursor back and forth the images will change.

But it still will not play.

Thanks for checking for the latest version of the QuickTime software.

Did you get a chance to look at renaming just the file extension of the source video?

In my previous post, I had asked you to try renaming just the file extension of your video (believed to be MPEG2.mp4) to see if that .mp4 wrapper format made a difference in the results. I have been thinking that you have MPEG2.mp4 because of your opening post where you ask about the addition of your MPEG 4 file.

I just went back to review your whole thread and noticed that your MediaInfo properties readout shows a video file with a .mpg not .mpeg4 file extention. Based on the MediaInfo properties reading, you appear to be dealing with a MPEG2.mpg file not a MPEG2.mp4 file. Could you say what brand and model camera your problem file is coming from so we can check that out further?

                            Thanks.

Yes, I did say mpeg4 because I have tried a coup of different capture

programs to bring this data in.  so far they all have the same result.

Currently I am using ArSoft ShowBiz to capture the a live feed from a 8mm

camera and specifying MPEG.  The video/audio out of the camera as it plays

is being captured by a USB-Live 2 made by Hauppauge.  The captured video

file plays well on windows media player.

I just reloaded the video file into ArcSoft and it still plays there.

When I load the .mpeg file into elements 11 it shows only one video slide

on the time line.  In earlier versions I remember seeing the frames shown

all across the time line.  Not sure it is related to the issue here.

I believe I can explain what you are seeing in the Timeline content.

The video tracks and audio tracks come with a choise of Track Style types.

Look to the left of where it says, for example, Video 1. You should see a filmstrip looking icon. You can toggle that to get 4 different styles of a video track:

                                1. just a vertical line running across the video portion of the clip

                                2. one thumbnail with image only at the beginning of the video clip

                                3. one thumbnail with image at the beginning of the video clip with only one other at the end of the video clip

                                4. thumbnails each with an image across the whole video clip

For the audio clip display style, my recollection is that there are 2 styles

                                1. With waveform

                                2. just a vertical line running across the audio portion

The case of the audio, the icon to the left of, for example, Audio 1 should look like a speaker.

I will think about your recent details some more.

                                Thanks.

                                  Thanks for the input.

I looked in the elements 11 movie themes\slideshow folder and saw there

were many mpg files.  I tried dropping various ones onto the time line and

play them.  I see the same result.  So I think that the problem is in the

playback of Elements or the video system on the Lenovo thinkpad laptop.  It

appears to be with elements because windows media player can play all files.

                                    Wade,

There are some major differences between simple playback (say with VLC player), and then playback of a Clip on the Timeline, ready for editing.

While testing a file with simple playback is a good first step, one should not develop a false sense of security. That is but a first step in testing.

I will read back up the thread, looking to see exactly what your video card/chip is, and also what the number and date of its video driver are. If you have not posted those data, please do so.

                                    Good luck,

Since most of us do not have the playback issues, that you are experiencing, we are trying to find out what is different between our successful playback of similar material, on our computers.

As the "white screen" is a classic manifestation of a bad or obsolete video driver, I wanted to find out if that was the problem in your case.

Some programs, like Premiere, the latest Photoshop, After Effects, 3D rendering applications and CAD programs, must interface much more closely with the video driver, than almost any other program that one is likely to have, with the exception of the newest extreme games. Even simple players do not rely so heavily on the video driver.

The nVidia Quadro can have drivers supplied from two sources: directly from nVidia, or in some cases, in a specially re-wrapped version from the computer mfgr., such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, Toshiba, and a few more. Those first three usually do a great job of taking the latest nVidia driver, and then re-wrapping it for their specific version of the nVidia chips and their specific version of the OS.

If you driver is more than a few months old, and especially if you have updated your OS, it is likely that it is obsolete, and if so, perhaps the latest version will fix that white screen.

That is the reason for my question about the video driver.

                                        Good luck,

                                          Thanks Bill, appreciate your help.

I do have the most recent drivers installed.  I also went to the device

manager and clicked update driver and it says I am at the latest release.

                                          The driver is dated 1/10/2013.

Is there any way to get support from Adobe?  Seems like I have tried all

Unfortunately, the OS will almost always be at least 6 mos. out of date.

You might check out this page on the nVidia Web site: http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro-notebook-win8-win7-64bit-320.00-whql-driver.html

It shows a new driver for the Quadro FX880M w/ Win7-64 from 05/03/2013.

As you have a Lenovo, if you have any trouble installing that nVidia driver, I would check on their Web site.

As there is much more control over nVidia chips in the Quadro line, it would be logical that Lenovo would not re-wrap the nVidia drivers, and that nVidia would have the latest.

                                            Good luck,

I looked in the elements 11 movie themes\slideshow folder and saw there

were many mpg files.  I tried dropping various ones onto the time line and

play them.  I see the same result.  So I think that the problem is in the

playback of Elements or the video system on the Lenovo thinkpad laptop

                                              .

I would offer to look first hand at one of your problem video clips. However, when I tried to do a one on one comparison with your testing that I quoted above, I could not confirm your result.

What I did was to copy the "weddingdoves_prv.mpg" file to the computer desktop from the Movie Themes program files area and import it into Premiere Elements 11. It played back fine using my Premiere Elements 11 on Windows 7 and 8 64 bit. There were about two flashes of white in the run of the clip in the Premiere Elements 11 monitor, but those appeared to be related dip to white transitions between the scenes involved.

The video card and its driver angle to this seems the obvious way to go although we might be surprised to find it is not.

You might want to get Adobe as well as Lenovo involved in this. Adobe first, especially if you are within a month of purchase.

Let me ask you this. At the present time, putting aside .mpg and .mp4, is there any video format that you can import into Premiere Elements and get an acceptable display of itsTimeline content in the Edit Mode Monitor?
