Does this happen on new documents that you create or on existing documents? Has InDesign crashed frequently in the past with some particular files? You may try cleaning the cache and see if that helps.
Quit InDesign if running already.
If you're on Windows: Drag the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Adobe\Adobe InDesign\Version 8.0\ en_US folder to the desktop.
If you're on Mac: Drag the \Macintosh HD\Users\<username>\Library\Caches\Adobe\Adobe InDesign\Version 8.0\ en_US folder to the desktop.
This is because you have edited the Basic styles.
With nothing selected go to the Type tool and Frame tools and make sure that the
and Object Styles
are set to Basic - and that they have no "+" symbol beside them.
You can clear the plus sign by pressing the button at the bottom of the Style panel.
It could also simply be that you've selected the stroke and text wrap options with no frame selected. Deselect all and make sure they are turned off.
