If I add a 16:9 still picture to my slideshow the picture appears in the middle of the screen with a black frame around it. I can then expand the picture manually so that it fills the screen. I have 500 16:9 pictures in this particular slideshow so to expand every picture manually is a big job. Is the any way that this can be done automatically? I am running under Windows 7, 64 bit. My Premiere Elements is version 11.

Well, it depends on what resolution it is.
But the simplest solution is to go to the preferences (under the Edit menu) and uncheck the Scale to Frame Size option BEFORE you add your photos. (This preference will only affect media you add after you change the setting.)
Another solution, if you don't want to redo your slideshow, is to select one photo on your timeline and open its Applied Effects. Adjust Scale (under the Motion effects) so that this photo fills your video frame. Then right-click on this photo on your timeline and select Copy, select all of the other photos on your timeline, right-click and select Paste Effects and Adjustments. Your scale settings will then be applied to all of the other photos.
Thank you for the information, Steve. I knew there must be a way of doing
