Is there a way in InDesign CS4 to search and replace within the Index Panel (or the index file) before the index is generated? I have hundreds on instances of ampersands in the generated index that I want to change to the word "and" but it's taking forever to change them in the generated index and then on the entries in the panel. It would be much quicker to change them all in the panel then genrate a new index.
I don't think you can do this from the UI, but a scripter should be able to.
Thanks. I'll look into it...
A bit rought and dirty.
var doc = app.documents;
var indexArry = ;
var indexArry = doc.indexes.indexSections.everyItem( ).topics.everyItem().getElements();
for ( var j = indexArry.length -1; j >= 0; j-- )
indexArry[j].name = indexArry[j].name.replace ( "a", "b" );
Edited to say: it was written in 6, no idea if it will work in 4.
