Problems with arw files and dng in same folder

    rogleale Community Member

Very confusing!   A few months ago I changed from  a Nikon D7000 to a Nex7 with no problems at all.

Now suddenly LR refuses to find or display recent arw files because there is a dng in the same folder, from the D7000, having the same serial number.

The arw files are there where they should be but I have to open them in CS6.   For example -  I have a dsc1544 arw and a dsc1544 dng in the same folder and LR will not display the arw file, only the dng file, so that I am unable to convert the arws to dng.

This is a new behaviour.  Is it possible to force LR to select by file type?

Perhaps I am misunderstanding what you are saying because of the terminology you are using, but ...

Lightroom does not display photos in a given folder, as it is not a file browser.

In order for a photo to appear in Lightroom, it has to be imported into Lightroom. Have you imported the ARW files into Lightroom?

            Thanks for answering.

As I said - this is a new problem, I have been using LR since RSP.

Trying to find a way round this

using Explorer I uploaded about 170 arw files into a Folder called 'Uploads' where I empty memory cards for sorting.  This folder is emptied before each use so that only arw files are loaded.

In LR library mode I select 'Import' and direct it to the Uploads folder- full of arw files as expected.

LR finds these files and adds them - so they are now visible in LR when the uploads folder is selected in Library mode.

I select six files dsc1541 to dsc1547.arw - move them to the desired folder -  not visible there!

Re-select the files and try to move them again - get the  'files already exist in destination folder' messsage.

Files still not visible in the folder - search for dsc1541  - 'no photo found'

Search for dsc1544 - get a dng file from several years ago.

The arw files are visible using Explorer  LR won't show them - so I can't use the 'Convert to dng' tool

Paige is still not sure he understands what is being said.

Probably irrelevant but in all my time here in this forum, I don't recall sing the initials RSP, so I have no idea what this means

I select six files dsc1541 to dsc1547.arw - move them to the desired folder -  not visible there!

I assume you mean you are doing this move from within Lightroom. I assume you mean you cannot see them in the desired folder when you select the desired folder in the Library Module.

Please make sure when you are looking for the photos in the desired folder that no filter is selected. You can turn filters on and off using Ctrl-L

Perhaps you could try a different workflow (and in fact one that involves fewer steps for you), where you import photos from the camera card and go have them go directly to the destination folder, instead of first putting them in an upload folder. Does that work?

What happens, if you try (just as a test), you move the photos from the Upload folder to a different destination folder that doesn't have a DNG with the same file name in it? Do things work properly then?

Re-select the files and try to move them again - get the  'files already exist in destination folder' messsage.

Please be more specific. Is this in Lightroom, or is this in your operating system? Somewhere they were not visible, so how are you re-selecting them?
