    Advice for disk usage

    nanodom Level 1

      Hi everybody!

I read the brilliant guideline of Harm about Disk Usage: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/662972

I ask your help to manage in the best way my new pc workflow.

      I will probably have 3 + 1 HDD or 2 + 1:

      - 1 SSD

      - 2 (or 1) HDD 7200rpm

      - 1 external HDD MyBook Studio II 2TB in RAID0 but I can configure it in RAID1 1TB (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=210)

How do you recommend to manage work on that configuration?

Are you on Mac or PC?

          For PC I would suggest:

C: SSD for OS, programs & pagefile

D: HDD for projects and media

E: MyBook over eSATA for media cache and previews in raid0

          F: 2nd HDD for exports

For MAC I would suggest to use the MyBook in raid1 for exports, since it is limited to FW800 and use the 2nd HDD for media cache, previews and exports.

          Additional disks are welcome.

            Thanks Harm!

            You're always punctual!

            I will be on PC.

Actually now that I'm starting to configurate my PC, I never considerate my WD MyBook cause it was external, but I was asking to myself if I should do.

            Do you think so?

And why do you choose it for media cache and previews?

It could be also a backup disk, maintaining your 3 disks configuration with internal ones? What do you think?

Thanks for your always precious help!!

Here's why Harm chose the external for media cache:

The sequential transfer speed of that external, when connected via eSATA, is faster than any single hard drive - if the external is configured as RAID 0. However, any other interface will seriously limit the performance of that external; for example, the next-dastest interface after eSATA, FW800, has a maximum sustainable (practical) transfer rate of only about 75 MB/s - slower than most if not all single disks. Hence, Harm recommended RAID 1 with that external when used with a Mac since no Mac has eSATA capability at all. Forget about using FW400 or USB with that external; that drive connected via USB (which is limited in that drive to the USB 2.0 standard) can only sustain 25 to 30 MB/s while FW400 performance (in the case of most pre-assembled external hard drive kuts) is even slower (due to the fact that most FW400-to-SATA translators used in external drive enclosures suck).

                Thanks!

                Very clear and helpful!!

My only doubt is that I forgot to mention the capability of the drives:

                - SSD 256Gb

                - internal HDDs 1Tb each

                - external MyBook eSATA 2 Tb (if in Raid0)

So, aside from the matter of speed, that I really understood thanks to you, talking about space, do you think it's all right to use the hard drive with more space just for the render preview and media cache?

                Thanks again!

                This forum is really helpful!

In this case, the largest-capacity disk is also the fastest disk besides the SSD.

                    Thanks RjL!

                    I know...

                    And what about this:

C: SSD for OS, programs & pagefile

D: HDD for projects and media

E: 2nd HDD for exports and cache

F: MyBook over eSATA for backup of D and E

                    ?

                    Isn't useful?

                      Here's the deal:

Backups should never be stored on a RAID 0 (even an external one) because of its lack of redundancy and because of its higher likelihood of total data loss. With RAID 0, your MyBook Studio is actually made up of two 1TB hard drives configured as RAID 0 by default. If even one of those 1TB disks fails, the entire contents of the entire 2TB array are lost forever. (And RAID 0 arrays are extremely difficult, maybe even impossible, to have their data recovered from even with astronomically expensive data recovery services.)

In other words, you have the wrong external disk for backups. The proper external hard disk for backups consists of just a single disk in a smaller enclosure with absolutely no RAID whatsoever.

                        Yes, you're right...

I could also change it in RAID1, but I will have a redundancy in a backup, so a double redundancy...

                        I think it's a little bit paranoid...

I will find a way to use all the 2 tb of the mybook...

                        Thanks!
