HDR Pro producing corrupted merge

Running CS6 Basic on W7-64bit. I'm not a frequent user of CS6, mostly Photoshop Elements does all I need, but I've been reworking the CS5 Classroom in a Book exercises to refresh my CS6 knowledge.

I've reached the exercise (page 139) where multiple images of a model are merged using File> Automate> Merge to HDR Pro... but getting a weird result. I've tried the two suggestions seen in this and the main Photoshop forum (resetting preferences, ensuring images are displayed in tabs) but neither has worked. My graphics drivers are up to date as are all Windows updates. It's very weird as I'm sure when I tried this exercise a year or so ago it worked fine. I did spot that there was a recent Photoshop update - could that have broken it?

Here is what I'm getting - any suggestions?

Well it's not the recent update. I uninstalled and reinstalled CS6 and the problem still shows with a clean original installation. Completely stumped as to what may be the problem.

Interesting - with the clean install I also let it install CS6 32-bit version as well (I've got more disk space now than I did a year ago). In the 32-bit CS6 Merge to HDR Pro works fine!

Does that give anyone ideas as to what the problem could be?

Have you ever gotten an answer to this problem? I am having the same problem, except that your images actually look much better than mine. My photos come out almost completely gray, with a hint of the photo behind it.

No. It still doesn't work in 64-bit, only 32-bit.
