Jeff A Wright Jun 11, 2013 4:08 PM (in response to As_Seen_ by_Janine)Janie please see http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/windows-vista-supported-lightroom-5.html. Also from posts I have seen you will not even be able to install under Windows Vista. I would recommend upgrading your operating system to Windows 7 or later if you wish to install Photoshop Lightroom 5.

2. Re: Why no Vista 64 bit compatibility for Lightroom 5?
leko2 Jun 16, 2013 9:20 AM (in response to Jeff A Wright)The question was not an if, it was a why. Did you read Janine's post? The page you linked to implied that the beta would work on Vista. So the question was, what were the results? I have vista running quite well on a 64 bit machine. Beyond 64 bits, what are the reasons? We know for a fact Adobe allows people to install fast apps on inferior machines and deal with lag by saying, "Well, it is an old system, what do you expect (LR4 anyone?)?"
Now, consumers will not buy LR5 if they have an old machineas part of their workflow but refuse to upgrade (because it is an old machine). The reason? LR 4 or 3 cannot open LR5 catalogs. So, I guess without a why, people will hold off on upgrading. Oh well. More cash for them I guess.

JBV^_^ Jun 19, 2013 11:18 AM (in response to leko2)I've got the same problem.
Running Vista 64.
Why should I "upgrade" to Win 7 when the core of both operating systems are the same? Pretty much the only difference being the removal of Aero (plus a few minor performance improvements.)
As for Win8 - that's the biggest pile of Sh*T microsoft has made since Win98ME (that or trying to sell Win2000 as a home OS for gaming.)
We are not asing for XP64 support, but support on a current (and very much underated OS) so let us install it.
Any one who thinks Vista is slower than Win 7 should try it on a 6 core, 16gb machine. It was released before the hardware could really cope with it.

Sucks to have been led to believe Vista would still be supported, due to the inclusion of VIsta 64 support on the Beta version, only to find the full release does NOT support VISTA.
Actually, even in Beta, Adobe said there is no Vista support even in Beta (read the beta released note). And people have been arguing a lot about this in the Beta Forum. Honestly, I think it's pointless to ask why. It's the same with windows XP. I don't think Adobe will change it. And no good reason will be accepted by users like us. Pretty much, we only have 2 choices: Upgrade OS or keep using LR4 (or switch to another software). Guess what, it's $150 less for Adobe and I don't think it makes any different to them.

EDDGO01 Jun 30, 2013 5:13 AM (in response to As_Seen_ by_Janine)I "upgraded" my version of Lightroom 4 to Lightroom 5 due to the following statement found here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom/faq.html
Are the features the same in the Windows and Mac OS versions of Lightroom?
Yes. Lightroom 5 has the same features and delivers the same professional, best-of-class results no matter which platform you use.
Very deceiving as an upgrade ! This is definitely not a true upgrade. Windows 7 or 8 is a requirement. My main photo editing OS is Vista and I am unable to install it. WHO in their right mind will purchase a new OS ( 7 or 8) and have to re-install all their current favorite phot apps ? I do have a second computer I have Lightroom installed on and was able to "Upgrade" that one to Lightroom 5. HOWEVER it did not recognize my current catalogue. You have to Import all your RAW files and start from scratch.
I believe many current users will be migrating to another photo-editing software ( Photoshop will only be available on the cloud) Not sure if Adobe plans to do the same with Lightroom too.

And getting a refund... I need to open the product, register then deactivate it? How can I do that when the thing won't even install?? The support pages just refer you to links that bounce back and fourth. I guess I'll have to randomly call the numbers listed...

17. Re: Why no Vista 64 bit compatibility for Lightroom 5?
As_Seen_ by_Janine Jul 1, 2013 4:40 PM (in response to EDDGO01)You can't upgrade from Vista 32 bit to Windows 64 Bit unless you do a full "clean install" which means reinstalling all your programs and files. A total rebuild. However, as someone else already said, you can run Lightroom on 32 bits. Still, it would be optimal if you run Lightroom and any other "memory hungry" photo applications on 64 bits.
I am lucky that I was running on Vista 64 bits. I have successfully upgraded to Windows 7 and didn't have to reinstall anything - I am now running Lightroom 5. Love it!

mike.bartelt Jul 8, 2013 2:45 AM (in response to As_Seen_ by_Janine)No thank you. This current Vista install is more stable than any XP computer I've ever owned. Uptime on this Vista system was nearly 6 months before my last restart... XP would usually crash on me at the 3-4 month mark for some reason no matter what build # I started at. The only thing more stable than it was when I was running W2K or NT 5.0. I had an W2K system with over a solid year of uptime.
Too bad Adobe. I won't upgrade my system for just one application. LR 4 will have to suffice. That's fine for me, it won't cost me anything to continue using...

However, just thought I'd share that my PC is now far more stable and efficient now that I'm running Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 than it ever was running Vista. So I don't view the op syst upgrade as having been just for one application, but rather a choice which has improved the overall efficiency of my system. Just food for thought.

Obviously there is a support issue, since it runs OK on Vista. Adobe/Lr has so many system-dependent problems, they don't want to make things more complicated by tossing OS variations into the mix. Understandable for them, good for all of us not on Vista (since they're not spending dev time testing on Vista), and bad for Vista users who don't want to upgrade. Oh well... .
I mean, such is my fairly-well-educated guess...
If I were you, I'd patch the installer, and install it on your Vista system, if you can't afford to upgrade Windows.
Conversely, if you can afford to upgrade, that is a better solution in the long run, in my opinion.

RI did buy W7 full and a new hard drive to install it on. The install couldn't finish on three different attempts. I put in my Vista disk, installed without problems.
My optimized Vista system runs better than my optimized W7 system. For some reason I keep getting intermittent app loading pauses in W7 on a quad core that I never get in Vista. They're both optimized almost identically.
For some reason W7 doesn't like me. Fully patched Vista has been nothing short of amazing to me.

35. Re: Why no Vista 64 bit compatibility for Lightroom 5?
mike.bartelt Aug 20, 2013 3:06 AM (in response to areohbee)Umm... it's an i7-2600k, 16GB, Asus mb, GTX 580, a 7200 rpm Barracuda 320g and a 2TB Hitachi... It's a couple of years old now... I guess the card is kinda dated, but the CPU is still relevant. So yeah, it's old to me, but it far exceeds Adobe's "System Requirements".
If you look at the requirements, it makes absolutely no sense. I can't imagine how Windows 7 would run on a P4 with 2 gigs of ram on a monitor at 1024x768, let alone trying to imagine how editing huge RAW files in LR5 on that system would work. How could anyone recommend that?

We were talking about installing w7, not Lr, right? Anyway, I had trouble installing Vista on my system (hardware was not approved for Vista), but once installed, it purred like a kitten... I'm guessing you could get w7 installed if you were willing to try some more... On the other hand, if you've had enough trying, why not patch the Lr5 installer and use the w7 disk for a coaster?

Youre not the first to notice a "paradox" - my guess: Adobe hasn't attended to the processor spec in years and it can be ignored - if your OS meets the spec, good enough... just a guess though.
As I'm sure you know - minimum sys.reqs are not intended to be optimal, but, well, minimum (e.g. suitable for preliminary trial but not for extended use). Lr will run with only 2GB, but most people will recommend at least 4 and preferrably 6 or 8 for optimal performance.

37. Re: Why no Vista 64 bit compatibility for Lightroom 5?
mike.bartelt Aug 20, 2013 5:30 AM (in response to areohbee)This thread is about the lack of Vista compatibility with LR5.
The minimum requirements aren't intended to be optimal, they shouldn't be intended to be a joke either. Get a P4 with 2GB and install W7 on it. A P4 with 2GB only runs XP adequately... as long as you're not doing any image or video editing on it. I have no idea how well W7 would run on a P4, but I'm willing to guess it's going to be quite slow, with lots of swap file activity. 2GB is barely enough for the OS... as soon as you do anything your system is hampered by constant page file access and constant memory swapping.
Then, take a bunch of photos with a Canon 30D or some other 10+ year old DSLR. Then download a couple hundred RAW photos and try to start editing them in LR5 on that system.
I'd be surprised if that system didn't lock up or crash every time you tried. I could be wrong.... someone might actually consider that useable. I didn't, even back then. What was it, Photoshop 5 or 6 back then? With 2GB of ram, it was painful to use back then, and if you wanted to open multiple images in it? lol
