1. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
rendernyc Jun 14, 2013 10:42 AM (in response to HeavyTheory.com)wow. that is a lot of power in a mobile machine.
any chance the power supply is being pushed beyond its limit causing a reboot?
first thought if a machine reboots like that i think heat or power issue

2. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
HeavyTheory.com Jun 14, 2013 10:51 AM (in response to rendernyc)I'm wondering that myself. I while back I was playing a lot of video games and the power brick turned off a few times (somehow) and then the machine would shut off the same way but I would have to pop the CMOS to get back in business. That isn't quite what's happening now but could be related. I'd love to solve this myself and not have to ship it to NY to get worked on - it's my only unit at the moment ;/

3. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
rendernyc Jun 14, 2013 11:13 AM (in response to HeavyTheory.com)can u try disableing a gpu in software and maybe a couple drives and then do the same render. see what happens?

4. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
Rick Gerard Jun 14, 2013 11:24 AM (in response to HeavyTheory.com)Try reducing the resources you have assigned to AE to make sure there's enough memory and enough cpu power to keep the rest of the machine running.

5. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
HeavyTheory.com Jun 14, 2013 11:29 AM (in response to rendernyc)I'm disabling SLI and forcing a single GPU and I'll see what that does.

6. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
HeavyTheory.com Jun 14, 2013 11:30 AM (in response to Rick Gerard)I'm going to look at the preferences and try and reduce the resources it's taking. Maybe it's hitting a bottleneck and the power suppy can't keep up. Thanks Rick.

7. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
rendernyc Jun 14, 2013 12:00 PM (in response to HeavyTheory.com)you said its happening in AE PR and EN so i wouldnt bother with app settings.

8. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
HeavyTheory.com Jun 14, 2013 12:57 PM (in response to rendernyc)That's a good point Danny. Well it made it though a partial render to video in AE. I'm going to try the full comp and if it makes it through that I will render for DVD in Encore (the last crash I experienced was from here.)
I forced single GPU in Nvidia control panel but also fully disabled SLI. Not sure if that matters, but it seems to have cut the render time in half. I read somewhere that forcing alternate rendering between cards would help, but I also thought that it was not recommended as my cards are not CUDA capable. The crashes were happening before I went to alternatate rendering by the way.
Really appreciate you guys helping me out. I will keep you posted on any progress. Cheers.

9. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
rendernyc Jun 14, 2013 1:01 PM (in response to HeavyTheory.com)unless you are raytracing in AE you are not using CUDA.
The gpus also have little effect on rendering unless you are using a specific plugin. Of the ones that are openGL based i dont think any use more than one card. So having only one enabled shouldnt affect your rendering as far as AE is concered.
GTX580s are CUDA capable cards btw and should be enabled in Pr. PR CS6 will only use one card, while PR CC will be able to take advantage of multiple cards while rendering

10. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
HeavyTheory.com Jun 14, 2013 1:06 PM (in response to rendernyc)That's really good to know. I had been looking around but had not gotten such a concise overview. I will make sure it's enabled in PR. I'm also really excited about the CC update.
So if I had gone with a single Quadro card instead of what I have would it have made much difference between AE and PR? I definitely feel like it would render faster in preview at least.
Last I checked I had read that my cards were not supported for Mercury Playback. Is that the case, or are these different topics? Thanks Man.

11. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
rendernyc Jun 14, 2013 1:17 PM (in response to HeavyTheory.com)i dont know specifics on the mobile cards but the 580 is very good performer.
there is a premiere test file and site but i dont have the link to that...
if you want to test your system in AE i have a CUDA test file and benchmark chart available here
http://www.loopoutcontinue.com/cuda
My best guess though is that you have the fastest setup possible.
if your cards arent officially supported you can add them to a txt file for CS6
in PR CC i believe even unsupported cards can be enabled directly in the app as long as they have at least 1GB of ram

12. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
HeavyTheory.com Jun 14, 2013 1:23 PM (in response to rendernyc)So now I'm really looking forward to CC more than before. Thanks Man. Well someday I will have that Dell t7600 with an Nvidia Maximus with Tesla.... Someday.

13. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
rendernyc Jun 14, 2013 1:34 PM (in response to HeavyTheory.com)might have better performance with the dual 580s

14. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
HeavyTheory.com Jun 14, 2013 1:45 PM (in response to rendernyc)How so? I would figure a Maximus system would obliterate 2 mobile 580's. What I'm saying is that I really want to believe you.
I have to wait 3 hours for the render to complete and then try it in Encore if it completes. I will let you know.

15. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
rendernyc Jun 14, 2013 1:51 PM (in response to HeavyTheory.com)yes, desktop versions would be faster, but the current quadros and teslas CUDA performance has been lackluster compared to the high end GTX and titan cards

16. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
HeavyTheory.com Jun 14, 2013 1:53 PM (in response to rendernyc)Makes me wonder if I jumped up to 780m's if I'd be set for a while. Thanks man.

17. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
HeavyTheory.com Jun 14, 2013 4:14 PM (in response to HeavyTheory.com)3 hours later I rendered the full project and it didn't crash... but I didn't tick the audio checkbox... sweet. Well at least it didn't crash. Strange part is it rendered exactly 59 minutes of video of a 72 minute comp....
Anyway thanks so much for the help.

18. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
Rick Gerard Jun 14, 2013 4:52 PM (in response to HeavyTheory.com)Just render the audio out of AE and then put it together with the movie in PPro or AME. No need to re-render the whole thing.

19. Re: Why is My PC Shutting Down During Render?
HeavyTheory.com Jun 14, 2013 4:54 PM (in response to Rick Gerard)I wish I hadn't just wiped that massive file and started over. I have a lot to learn. In the future if I do something like that can I dynamic link into Encore to burn a composition without the full re-render? Thanks Rick.
