john beardsworth Jun 15, 2013 12:33 PM (in response to penderra)No, flags are only one bit of metadata that isn't included in xmp. File > Export as Catalog and FIle > Import from Another Catalog are the best ways to move you work from one machine to another.

john beardsworth Jun 15, 2013 1:32 PM (in response to penderra)Smart previews mean that you can edit on the laptop when it's away from the originals, but they don't change where the metadata is actually stored. What you might do is simply move the catalogue, including the previews and smart previews folders, when you change machine. That would cut out the Expot/Import bits.
In LR, xmp is more for a convenience for communicating with other apps. All your LR work is in the catalogue.
