    Flags on import

    penderra Community Member

I do most of my work on my desktop, and all the files are held there with xmp files. On my laptop, I import the photos in their folders, but leave the files on the desktop, and I am now going to be doing that more with the new smart preview option.

The one problem I have, though, is that the pick flags are not in the metadata, and therefore don't cross to the laptop. Is there any way this can be done? I use the laptop to show others, and to allow them to choose the photos they want, so it would be good to have the flags and the colour badges, and for the traffic to go in both directions.

No, flags are only one bit of metadata that isn't included in xmp. File > Export as Catalog and FIle > Import from Another Catalog are the best ways to move you work from one machine to another.

Yes, I see your point, but I was hoping for the two-way sync without going down that route - especially now that the smart previews are available

Smart previews mean that you can edit on the laptop when it's away from the originals, but they don't change where the metadata is actually stored. What you might do is simply move the catalogue, including the previews and smart previews folders, when you change machine. That would cut out the Expot/Import bits.

In LR, xmp is more for a convenience for communicating with other apps. All your LR work is in the catalogue.
