Exchange panel crashes OS (CC update)

    nathanalf Community Member

So, the problem is that nomatter what app I try openening the Exchange panel from, it always starts using 100% of the CPU power to the point where I can't even shut down the app or the computer. Everything just stops responding entirely. I can reproduce this in Photoshop, Dreamweaver, InDesign, and Illustrator.

I've tried uninstalling the exchange panel, uninstalling the entire CC suite, tried deleting everything using the CC cleaner tool, and nothing seems to work. I am on a MacBook Pro running 10.8.4 and have updated all of the CC apps. The thing that confuses me is that on my home computer (Macbook air) it runs absolutely fine.

          Hi nathanalf,

          Thanks for getting in touch.

Firstly - could you try closing the Creative Cloud desktop app (click the cog weel in the corner and Quit), then locating this file and moving it to your Desktop or somewhere else that software won't be looking for it:

          /Users/user_name/Library/Application Support/Adobe/opm.db

Then try reopening Photoshop or another product and see if the Exchange panel behaves better (you should be prompted to login if you click My Stuff).

If the problem persists, please share these files with me fgregor at adobe dot com:

          /Users/<UserName>/Library/Preferences/Adobe/Exchange/adobeexchange.log

          /Users/<UserName>/Library/Logs/PDApp.log

          /Users/<UserName>/Library/Logs/amt3.log

          Thanks,

          Fraser

Does anyone know what this warning is and how to fix it?  Only started recieveing this warning from Drive Genius after I upgraded to CC and replaced my graphics card from ATI Radeon 5870 to Nvidia GTX 680.  These changes may not be the issue, but thought I should mention.

The preferences file at '/Users/tomfirestone1/Library/Preferences/Adobe/Exchange/ExmanMac/_MACOSX/Contents/Framew orks/adobe_caps.framework/Versions/A/Resources/._Info.plist' may be corrupted. Corrupted files can cause application crashes and shutdowns.

              Hi tomfirestone,

I'm trying to work out whether the warning message you're seeing is related to nathanalf's crashing problem or if it's unrelated. If your problem is totally separate - could you please post it in a separate thread so discussions are easy to follow?

Otherwise, what actions are you taking to cause that warning message to appear? Is it immediately after launching the Adobe Exchange panel?

              Many thanks,

              Fraser

                Hi Fraser,

                Thanks for the response.

These warnings just happen.  I have no idea why…  Please see the attached screen grab - Does any of this/these path warnings mean anything to you?  And they are getting worse and more frequent.  I tried moving the file ( adobe exchange.log ) to the desktop to see that would help, but it did not.  It's not immediate after opening an exchange panel in Ai or Ps.  It's when I wake up and there is a "Pulse" problem with my machine as detected by Drive Genius's Verify Preferences.

Can you point me in the right direction to post this in a forum?  I did it once before, but for some reason I can't figure out how to post again.  I type my question in and then there's no where to actually post it.

                Thanks,

                Tom

                  Hi Tom,

If you go to the list of threads in "Exchange General Discussion", in the right sidebar there should be an option to "Start a discussion":

                  http://forums.adobe.com/community/design_development/exchange/post!input.jspa?containerTyp e=14&container=3241

Are you always getting errors around that same file?

It should be safe to remove the folder /Users/tomfirestone1/Library/Preferences/Adobe/Exchange by moving it to your Desktop or elsewhere. I imagine your "Drive Genius" software may still complain about the moved file, but you should be able to delete it later once it has been automatically recreated. Next time you open an Adobe Product and launch the Exchange Panel, this folder should be rerecreated, including a new (hopefully not corrupted!) Info.plist file.

Thank you.  Do you mean removing the Folder "Exchange" in Preferences?  Or just the .log file with the log path messages...

Do I need to install the actual app Exchange?  I haven't because it appears to be built into these other apps, and it seems like lots of people are having issues with Exchange, so I didn't want to download and install yet.

                    Here's my latest warning path:

The preferences file at '/Users/tomfirestone1/Library/Preferences/Adobe/Exchange/ExmanMac/_MACOS/LogTransport2.ap p/Contents/MacOS/HLCrashProcessor.app/Contents/._Info.plist' may be corrupted. Corrupted files can cause application crashes and shutdowns.

                    Thanks,

                    Tom

Yes, you should be able to remove the folder "Exchange" and everything inside it.

Then, you should install any available updates in your Creative Cloud app (which will automatically update the Adobe Exchange Panel for you to the latest version), and then open the Adobe Exchange panel (Window > Extensions > Adobe Exchange) in your CC product.

You do not need to do anything to install Adobe Exchange itself; it is automatically installed with CC products.

                        Okay.  Thank you.

For my CS6 products… do you think I should have the CS6 Exchange installed… ?

All Adobe CC is up to date as well.

The Exchange Panel is not installed automatically with CS6 products, but it should not cause a problem for CC products if you already have the Exchange Panel in CS6. (They are installed to two separate locations and should not interfere with each other).

Feel free to install the Adobe Exchange ZXP from www.adobeexchange.com using Extension Manager CS6 if you would like to use it in CS6 prooducts.

                            Email sent!

Moving the opm.db didn't work and still crashed the system. I couldn't find the amt3.log in that location though.

                              Hello,

I am still having these issues/warnings coming from my HD SSD via Drive Genius.  Everyday it scans my HD and reports these many potential crash warnings.  I believe this started when I installed Adobe CC, but not 100% sure.  I run "Repair Permissions" and all that and the same warnings pop up the next morning when I wake up.

I would appreciate some help and a fix/work around for this because I have invested $8,000 in hardware and software into my machine and it bothers me to have these crash warnings.

Attached is a screen grab again of what this looks like.  It appears it is solely related to Adobe Exchange.  At the minimum, can some confirm that this is a 100% Adobe Exchange malfunction?

                              Thanks,

                              Tom

@nathanalf - I've replied to your email - let me know if it doesn't arrive.

                                Hi tomfirestone,

These files all start with dot underscore (._) - they are actually metadata files, created by OS X to store file information that would otherwise go into an extended attribute on the HFS+ file system. This means that it's true that they aren't valid plist files (hence why they're being flagged-up by your third party software), but they are actually metadata files relating to the real plists.

They are currently included in Adobe Exchange for backward-compatibility with older versions of OS X, but they will be removed in the next update.

For now, if you want to get rid of these files -

                                Delete the folder

                                /Users/tomfirestone1/Library/Preferences/Adobe/Exchange

                                Download the following file:

                                Download

And overwrite the file at /Library/Application Support/Adobe/CEPServiceManager4/extensions/AdobeExchange/assets/ExmanMac.zip

Note - this will mean that the digital signature check will fail for Adobe Exchange, so it will not be loaded in any Adobe products. If you would like to temporarily disable digital signature checking so that you can use the Exchange Panel in the meantime before we issue an update to remove these metadata files, you can follow these steps:

                                open Terminal and type:

                                sudo plutil -convert xml1 ~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.CSXS.4.plist

                                open -a TextEdit ~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.CSXS.4.plist

… a blob of XML should pop up in TextEdit which looks something like this:

                                <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

Save your changes to the file.
