@Ariel – once I felt into that trap…
I think, if I remember that right, that in case you set enableRedraw to false, the progress bar cannot show any progress. Hm, maybe it did not show at all. Yes, I think, that was it…
Anyone who has a Mac and a spare moment, may I invite you to download
the demo of the "Create Character Styles" script on my website:
www.freelancebookdesign.com, under the "Scripting" tab.
It has a progress bar and enableRedraw = false (hence my interest in
this subject), and it never occurred to me to test it on a Mac.
If someone could test it on their Mac and tell me what happens, that
would be much appreciated.*

@Ariel – just tested:
the progress bar was visible, but no progress in the bar…
Just the message how many character styles were created after the empty progress bar vanished (1 for a skewed word: named "Skew: 16"; 16 is the skew angle).
InDesign CS5.5 v7.5.3 with Mac OSX 10.6.8
Tested with a placed word file of roughly 180,000 characters.
Thanks Uwe. Definitely disconcerting for the punters out there who are
downloading the demo.
I'll have to fix it. But I wonder how. It seems a shame to slow the
script down just for the sake of a progress bar. Hmm. Ideas welcome.
