Did you by chance have "Automatically write changes into XMP" selected, see screen shot.
If you did or have done it manually then you would be able to re-import all your Photos into a new Catalog. Some things would be lost like collections, develop history, virtual copies and other stuff that is special to Lightroom.

Heirloom Bob Jun 28, 2013 7:49 AM (in response to DdeGannes)I thought I was deleting old Backups and in fact I also deleted the Catalogue itself. Not in recycle but the files were several GB's each so they would be too large for Recycle. I remember something about recycle bins for each drive and since these were on my E drive, might the be another recycle bin there? I am looking for it now.
Yes I did have automatically write changes to XMP selected but only recently so I doubt that changes made months or years ago would be included?
