    Import Issues

    Heirloom Bob Community Member

Some of you may remember that I was the idiot that deleted not only my Lightroom backups, but deleted my Lightroom Catalog as well.

So here I sit importing my photos.

Problem #1: On my F drive I have a folder entitled 2002 Photos. Inside of 2002 Photos, there are 8 subfolder with various dates from 2002.

Not clear what the actual issue is, Bob.

Your question isn't exactly clear. But the dated folders have to do with your import settings. When you specify a destination to Move or Copy your photos to, you can select, in the Destination panel, the hard drive you want to use and an already extant folder on that hard drive; and you can check the box for Into Subfolder and then give it a name and specify Organize, By Date or Into one folder. From your comment it appears you selected the hard drive but not a folder on that drive. It also appears you chose Into Subfolders but did not specify a folder name for the enclosing folder; you did select - or left selected - Organize>By Date. Hence the folder for photos dated 2002 with subfolders, which no doubt correspond to the various dates in 2002 the photos were taken.

I surmise from the fact you are apparently puzzled by this result that you did not actually choose these settings yourself, but let the defaults apply to your import. If you would prefer a different organization scheme (and you should do) you will have to spend some time planning that scheme and working with your import settings to get them to work the way you want them to. To begin with, I suggest you choose a name for the enclosing folder for your imports so that your hard drive organization will be, well, organized. You could even create a folder on your F drive ahead of time and specify that as the import destination. This will enable you to give each import a specific folder name within that enclosing folder. This all falls under the rubric, a stitch in time saves nine. Since you are starting over from scratch anyway, why not develop an organization plan that will make your life easier down the line.
